Re: Is this HVX?

Yeah....I'm afraid I must agree with Nut House. If this one plant has the virus, and the owner is unfamiliar with the HVX virus, it is highly unlikely that precautions have ever been taken when transplanting, trimming, removing spent scapes, etc. I wouldn't risk it, especially with the new findings ...

Re: Seed Timing and Viability - newb questions ;)

Hi! I'm no expert by any means, but I'll jump in here.... All hosta varieties are different. Some seeds can be ready earlier than others. The earliest I've heard of is 6 weeks, but this year has been strange with all the heat and I had black seeds in dried pods on my Queen of the Seas at about 4 wee...

Re: Do you have a favorite newly acquired plant this year?

I didn't have much $$$$ to spend this year on hostas (or anything else for that matter  ), so when Chris had his sale I picked up some of the oldie-but-goodies. I think of those I got this year, Golden Meadows and Regal Splendor are real standouts for me. I can't believe I waited so long to acq...

Awesome!

What a great looking little hosta! Put me down for one in 2011, too. I'll have a Wings of Prayer when it is available, too!

Way to go, Chris!

Re: Now what?

You can gradually increase the amount of sun they get just by moving them to different locations. Depending on the light available in your yard you shouldn't have to be there during the day to move them in and out of light. Where I live, I know where/when the shade on the north side of the house hit...

Re: H. Seducer anyone?

I've had burnt edges, too, and just general 'spots' on things.

We had a cold winter, wet spring week, hot spring week, wet spring week, hot spring week.....dry, dry, dry....wet...dry hot,dry hot...etc. you get the picture.

It may just be the weather...

I hope it comes back better for you next year.

Re: Now what?

I agree with what has been suggested already. The only exception I may take would be to go ahead and repot them then move outside (if the temp difference isn't too extreme right now) to a completely shaded area for a day or two then gradually increase the amount of sun. I think putting them in a win...

I just love all the names you've given them, too. I would by any hosta named Stormcloud.

I haven't had a home grown tomato yet this year. Mine were about 3 weeks late getting in the ground, so I guess I'm gonna have to go get some!

Re: Greenhouse heating alternatives

Some tropicals are more sensitive - bouganvilla for one - anything below 38 and you are really taking a chance. I have a small lemon tree, bird of paradise, mandevilla, boston fern, sago palm, aloes, agaves....and they all do fine. I keep a few annuals - geranium, impatiens, black eyed susan vines, ...

Re: Greenhouse heating alternatives

thanks for the reply, Gardentoad. I think I would like to keep the temp at 40- 45 at the lowest. I, too, don't need plants to grow, but just live thru the winter. I find that even tropicals will do okay and just need a sprucing up in the spring. The greenhouse is freestanding with a wood frame and p...

Greenhouse heating alternatives

I posted in the other thread, but would like all you experts ideas. I have a 10x16 greenhouse that I like to keep going all winter. I'm in zone 5, so we have extended periods of cold weather. For years I've been heating with up to 3 1500w electric heaters. They aren't on a thermostat - I've just tur...
