I have an Ernest Markham that I've finally moved from its partially shady location to the front garden, where it will get more sun. Here's a pic of it a couple of years ago. Phyllis

Notmartha -- It does look like a hibiscus, doesn't it? Whatever it is, its seed needs to have been very tiny, because it was mixed in with heuchera seeds and chaff, all of which is pulverized so it looks like fairy dust. A large seed would have been noticeable, for sure. We'll just have to keep wait...

Pic #1 -- either pinks (like carnations, but smaller) or hardy geraniums; also morning glories, the blue ones. Pic # 2, some sort of bellflower, I'd guess. Pic #3, Pinks or geraniums again. Since these are stylized flowers, they are most likely to be nothing recognizable at all. Where do your pics c...

My sentiments exactly, Lucy! The leaves are really lovely, and very large for the size of the plant, so when it grows up I think it will be very tropical looking, and not a bit weedy. Time will tell -- can hardly wait to see it flower! Phyllis

Viktoria -- Have no idea, since I don't know what that is. I'm on my way to look it up! Thanks for the suggestion -- have a look at the new pics under a new thread. Phyllis

Mystery Seedling -- up to date pics

Here is the supposedly-heuchera-but-definitely-not seedling, as it appears this morning. It's in a 3 1/2 inch pot, and is about 4 inches high at present. I've done three pics from different angles, so you can get a better idea of its shape. The main stem is fuzzy, but that doesn't show up on the pic...

No, it's definitely not a mum, or a daisy -- the leaves are not toothy enough for that. I looked at it today when I watered it, and it's grown a couple of new leaves, so a pic would be a good idea. I'll do that tomorrow, and post it here. I did notice that the stem has fine little hairs on it, somet...

Disappointment -- it can't be anything in the Heuchera/Tiarella?Heucherella line, because it has a central stem, from which leaves branch off at intervals, and on opposite sides of the stalk. All the above have leaves that emerge from the crown. So, now what? I'll post again next week, when it's had...

Thanks, folks -- I never thought of Tiarella, or of a Heucherella, either. Wouldn't that be cool? I do have some tiarellas in the garden, so it's a possibility. I'll certainly keep you posted as it grows. Again, thanks! Phyllis

Mystery seedling masquerading as a Heuchera

My seedling heucheras are up and growing, but there's an intruder in the batch! I thought at first it was just a very toothy-leaved heuch, but by now it has grown large enough for me to tell that it is definitely NOT. I'll attach pics -- one of this plant by itself, and another with it next to the h...

I am in a suburb of St. Paul MN (northern edge), and our zone is officially 4a. However, most of my front yard garden is probably 5, since it faces south, and is protected by the house, part of which has a brick wall. I usually can plant perennials out after May first, but often have to run out to c...

Here I am, and thanks, Lucygoose for the info re: year-old heuchera seeds. I have a ton of them left, after having sown twelve seed containers (all of which are germinating like mad), and I was wondering if the leftover seeds would be good for another year. Thanks for letting me know. Phyllis

I've planted them twice, and have had trouble keeping them alive both times! I usually don't lose plants, but these really were dicey. Anyone else had that experience? Phyllis

I'm glad to hear that someone has had luck with T. Sweet Kate! I didn't think it was possible to kill a tradescantia, but I've had two clumps of SK, and they've both faded away -- right next to a very vigorous clump of a different tradescantia that runs away all over the garden. Go figure! I'm not t...
