Re: Guess who got to visit Chris and Brian?!

Nothing better in my opinion than visiting in the garden. Jim, I'm glad I'm not the only one who forgets to take pictures.

Re: Hosta addict

Oh, what a terrible problem! Seriously, I'm glad that your mom is loving the hosta, and glad that you can grow them for her! What great memories you're making!

Re: Suggestions?

I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. Last year was a horrible winter. I lost a couple hundred seedlings that were planted in the ground, some that were as old a 10 years old. I didn't lose a lot of the other hostas, but mostly I think the issue was that the snow cover blew off the bed where I pla...

Re: Old Coot....

I always think of him when the lilies are in bloom. I was thinking of him yesterday morning when I walked past a big bunch of them, but didn't realize at the time that it was his birthday. When you talk to Joy, be sure and tell her that some of us out here still think of the Old Coot and miss him.

Re: Sick of weeding already

I have Rose of Sharon too, and I've never seen so many seedlings as I have this year. I've hit the areas where they are growing twice with Roundup to kill them off, and there's another flush coming. I will keep the darn bushes, because I got them from a dear friend who is no longer with us. I will n...

Re: What's happening to 'Mack the Knife'?

I have dozens and dozens of hostas with cold damaged leaves. It was a brutal winter, and a very strange spring. We suddenly got some very warm weather as the hostas were unfurling, before the trees leafed out. Poor things have a rough life out there in the cruel world.

Re: Help-Found this little guy buried, think its Blue Mouse

Sorry, not Blue Mouse Ears. :( The blossoms on BME are directly on top of the leaves, and the leaves themselves have more of a curled up appearance, like a cupped mouse's ear.

That would be quite a surprise! It was nice of him to pose by the sculpture, but apparently he wasn't well-mannered enough to decline the sushi.

Re: My hosta garden...year 2014

Your garden is very nice! I really like the way you've placed the hostas, and the companion plants give it a tropical feel.
Glad you are enjoying your hosta habit!

Re: Hosta of the year ... in your garden.

An interesting background story on World Cup: I was at the national hosta convention last week, touring the gardens. One of the stops was a hosta nursery, and we were walking through the growing beds when I spotted World Cup, and was telling my friend what a great hosta it was. I turned around, and ...

Re: Hosta of the year ... in your garden.

I think mine this year would have to be Golden Meadows, but World Cup is a close second. Both of those are fairly slow growers, but both have really come in to their own this year. By the time GM starts to lose the bold spring color, WC will likely jump to the top. I'll try to get a pic soon. I am s...

Re: Sick of weeding already

Over the past few years, I've used a pre-emergent in the hosta beds. This year it was very hard to get it on in time, because of the harsh weather conditions in early spring. I've had the largest crop of lambsquarter that I can remember, and another 'weed' source is the Sweet Annie that I forgot to ...

Re: Do they come back?

Donna, I've moved hostas in the past, and apparently left behind a small piece of crown, and had the same hosta pop up there a year or two later. Maybe there was just a small bit of crown still alive and it gathered strength and emerged again. On my screen I could see 4 leaves of a plant that could ...

Oh my! Now that you have it in the ground it will probably get even bigger, after it gets over being insulted by your knife.
I had quite the picture in my mind of your struggle getting it out of that pot.

Re: Anyone going to Cedar Rapids

We are camping about 6 miles away from the convention hotel. We had a visit from Dave Bowe and party in the early afternoon, walked around the gardens for a couple hours, then rolled out. We didn't make it to the convention hotel to register until about 8:45, last ones to register for the day. Then ...

I just removed two green eyes frm mine today. I hadn't seen any green leaves on it before this year. The rest of it looks great, larger than I expected it to get.

I think I would just leave them alone, too. If you've weeded, fertilized and watered, I'd stand back and see what happens.
