Re: YOUR tour of my garden!

Beautiful gardens, Melissa. Thank you for sharing them with us...great photos, too!

May I ask...in the photo with Pineapple Upside Down Cake, what is the dark blue hosta in the upper left corner?

Re: Survey to evaluate Heuchera

wow, no wonder the palace purple is the only one left in my garden. This plant seems to be the "undulata" in the heuchera world! Thanks from me, too for posting the results. I would like to add some heuchera to my gardens, but have had limited success, except with Palace Purple, of course. :D...

Re: Opinions for shade

What if you put some wood lattice across the tops of your pergolas? Or fastened it under the bottom. I've seen other folks do that in photos that I see posted and it seems to give the hostas enough shade. It may also need a center support.

Re: A question about seed pods.

Excessive heat will most certainly prevent pods from forming, and can cause them to abort. Last year was a very unusual year, and I heard reports of many plants setting pods that typically don't. Did you get some seeds from those pods last year? I'd be curious to see what kind of seedlings one could...

Re: Older Hostas

Hi, Angel - Your Gold Standard looks great so far! :D Be sure to look at some of the photos Chris has posted on the HVX forum, as he certainly has pics of GS with HVX. I would take a closer look at the dark spots starting on the veins in that leaf at the 1:00 position....that's how it starts with GS...

Bayer also makes a product without fertilizer in it that has the same ingredients to control the Southern Blight. \

It is just "Disease Control" for roses, flowers, and shrubs

Re: What Annuals Worked for you? What annual is your loser?

I always have great success with impatiens, variety "Super Elfin." The variety you choose is critical. I always have fun with Angelonia, vinca, sweet potato vine - all colors - and this year I tried Bonanza marigolds and they are pretty sturdy compared to most. I also really like bacopa and calibrac...

Yes, my jackmanii can vary year to year....sometimes the flowers are large and 5-6 petals and sometimes they are all 4 petals.

Re: Older Hostas

It's never a bad idea to treat ANY new hosta as potentially infected and get in the habit of cleaning your tools and hands well between plants. Because HVX can be present in a plant and not show symptoms for some time, you will then avoid infecting your other plants should it show up. Yes, very goo...

Re: Older Hostas

I hate to over generalize, but most anything from Walmart or the box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot) WILL be infected with something you don't want in your hosta gardens....especially things like Gold Standard and Royal Standard. I heard not too long ago that there may be no clean Royal Standard on the ...

Hi, Angel3K - This sounds like a really fun project! Sounds, too, like you are getting some great info from everyone here on the forum. I don't wish to be a wet blanket, but maybe you could consider me a voice of reason... Since the collection you are putting together could be very special and maybe...

Re: H. 'Candy Dish'

I have 2 that I got from Bob Solberg....beautiful hostas and decent growers. That is the only place they were available when I got them. This is their 3rd season in the ground and they are each 5-6 eyes. While they are not super-speedy they have kept pretty good pace with most around them. No signif...

Re: Darn - something bad just showed up

If it is showing symptons as strongly as it is and the test is negative, it probably isn't HVX. I don't see much green in your testing solution, so maybe you should try once more? I wonder if it isn't aphids or something as there is damage along the veins. Maybe something damaged the veins causing t...

Re: Leaf problem

It is likely the change in environment from where it was grown in the spring to where it is now. Many of mine are doing that this year, as we had a very damp, cool, cloudy spring that turned off hot and dry suddenly. The leaves emerge and form based on the conditions at that time, then if the enviro...
