Ademink, what have you crossed with your plantaginea?

I have no idea....LOL...it wasn't on purpose! It just did its thing! I went out and looked and there was this HUGE pod on it (they're LOOOOONG). Then another...and another. They were all on the same plant.

Then I loved the smell of the flowers so much, I cut a scape and brought it in the house. The crazy thing self-pollinated while it was in a little bottle on my kitchen window sill! Is that crazy, or what??

The two seedlings that are planted in the ground right now are bright green and really smooth and shiny w/ pointed leaves. I haven't checked the other smaller ones that are still in cups to see what they are doing.

I read somewhere that plantaginea only likes to cross with itself to produce, and to get anything else you have to jump thru a few hoops. I would like to keep updated on the babies' progress. I got plantaginea from Chris a few weeks ago, so I am hoping it blooms this year. Pretty exciting stuff. :D

I know you all have been eagerly anticipating this update, and are as excited about it as I am!!! 8-) 8-) But here's a pod update...it is growing!

I don't think you can see it in the pic, but the pod has the misting of the center of the leaves. I know chances are slim, but I am praying for black seeds in there!

Thanks for looking! :D

Here's an updated pic of Ghost Spirit with pod. I am surprised that GS is holding this color so long. I didn't think it did that. I was really worried about the pod, as we have had heavy driving rains and some wind....sturdy little pod...hope there's seeds in it!

Charla, my GS is still holding on to it's misting too. I'm so happy with it. However, mine didn't set a seed pod. Hope yours are good black seeds!!!!

My Ghost Spirit is still holding it's misting too. It's finished blooming I think. No sign of any pods on mine. I didn't try to cross it with anything.

I've never gotten a pod on Plantagnea (sp) but I was reading about the giant pod--like 100+ seeds in one pod! Be nice if it selfed, as there's not much else blooming at that time.....

Anyone tried Abiqua Driniking gourd for it's pollen?
thx

Mal, I got OP'd seeds off my Drinking Gourd last year, and I think every one of them sprouted! So if that is any indication, I would say the pollen is good. Also, I hear that it is difficult to set anything on Plantaginea except for Plantaginea. Haven't tried that one yet myself. Have heard some have been able to cross it by placing P pollen around the edge of the stygma then the cross pollen in center? Dunno for sure...

Well, my Ghost Spirit pod came off the scape about 10 days ago. It continued to dry in an envelope. Just couldn't stand it anymore today and it looked totally dry. It was, I think, as I barely squeezed it and it popped open.

Guess what was inside??? 4 beautiful black seeds!!!! :D :D :D :D I hope they are viable. The odds have been against me all along to even get those, so maybe they'll sprout! They are GS x Blue Cadet.

A question I have for you pros, is how long I should wait before planting them? I read somewhere that on the fragrant ones, if you wait longer than 2-3 weeks to plant the seeds that the germination potential goes way down. I want to give these 4 seeds the best possible scenario to work with. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance! :D

Charla! This is awesome! :bd: I think planting them while they're fresh is best but wait for a 2nd "pro" opinion!

Thanks, Andrea. I'm pretty excited. I wonder if chilling it for a few weeks would do anything for it? Still hoping for some more advice...

They don't need to be chilled. You can just plant them.
