What does your Undulata look like?

Post by jobranch »

I have about 30 H. Undulata Albomarginata in my yard. Over the years their color has changed to what you see below, which is OK to me. They look streaked or misted with some petals that are have white with two shades of green. I would be interested in seeing pictures of other mature Undulata's...

Hi--It looks like the clump has sported. However, it is hard to believe all 30 plants would produce the same sport, so this is just a long way of saying "I don't know".

I know what you mean. These hostas are probably 8 or 9 years old and I divided them all from just a few plants which was given to me by my mother in law - with no indentification. This year, I have seen identical hostas (identical leaf) at both a local nursery and The Home Depot. These hostas were marked as Undulata Albomarginata and were new plants, or at least recently put into inventory. So they have sported the same way. I emailed Bob Axmear of the Hosta Library and he said these hostas are extememly unstable. So, I think I have identified it correctly. But, I could be wrong. There are so many hostas that look like Undulata...

Jo,

Here's mine. First picture is a closeup of the leaf. Second of the plant in early spring and last group shot taken 6/20/07.

These guys are about 10 years old.

Sorry but reducing them makes the edges have ripples and the pictures get gritty.

And already I've changed it some. I moved some of those large clumps to another bed and made room for some of my new additions. They never seem to notice that they were moved. Heavy buggers too! Those clumps are about 2' to 3' across. I love them but there are so many that I use them as fillers when I make a new bed and have young plants in. Later when the young plants get bigger I move the undulatas to a new area :D since they're so willing. They never get really bad looking for me unless they're getting too much sun where they are. Then the edges get a little 'crispy'

Jeff,
The picture you show doesn't appear to be Albomarginata. That ungainly word translates to white (albo) edge (margin). Yours is probably Undulata, but not Albomarginata. There are many, many hostas mislabeled out there. I visited a garden yesterday where many of her hostas are mislabeled, not due to any fault of the gardener, but because she purchased them with the wrong labels.
The typical Undulata comes up with white centered foliage in the spring, and then begins to green up. Mark Zilis says in his Hosta Handbook that many people think they are seeing a sport.
I'll try to get a pic of my old Undulata Univitatta if it stops raining anytime soon!

Sam--I don't think that plant is any of the Undulattas.

That wouldn't surprise me Hank, as my knowledge of hosta names is non existant
I was given that name somewhere
What do you think it is? Can I get on the right track here at last? :)
Is it AlboPicta?

Yes, Sam, that could be 'Fortunei Albo-picta' if the center turns green as the season (even your cool one) progresses. My Albo-picta is almost all the same color by now. The Undulatas I've seen always have WHITE variegation, except where the centers have gone green/misty green.
