Which Hosta

Post by nanny_56 »

We have an area where I want to plant a very large hosta. From the ones Chris has, which one would you say is a MUST HAVE? :snow:

All of them, Claudia, all of them!
I haven't studied the entire list yet. I'll do that soon, and give you my answer.

Need more info. What are the lighting conditions, and what direction does it face?

I was also wondering if you want big upright, big mounding, big leaves or just a big clump? Let us know :)

I not sure on rather upright or mounding. I thinking maybe upright for now. I want big leaves. Our house sits at a really odd angle. It would get morning sun till about 10am and shaded bright light after that. Does that make sense??

Linda, that is only in my dreams!!

To help your imagination some, an upright or vase-shaped hosta tends to highlight the leaf petioles and edges of the leaf. The leaves are held in a more horizontal manner. I consider Sagae and Sum and Substance to fall into this category.

In some other forms, the leaves tend to form a dome shape, and the color and/or surface of the leaf itself might get more attention. I would put Blue Angle into this category.

Hope this helps!

Claudia, my first thought was actually to say that if you don't have Blue Angel, you must get it. And while you're at it, add Earth Angel, too. You really do need both of them!
(I'd share some pics, but all my pics are on my old computer, and there's been no time to get them transferred yet!)

If you have enough space, maybe you could plant them together, about 6 feet apart and they can grow together.
