Freshman Class at Enabler U
Some new favorite hosta added this year.
Planted a number of hosta in pots and root control bags for the first time - need to try new things and experiment (code for finding more areas I can grow hosta). Ginsu Knife started slow but is coming on and starting to look good - took 3 years to finally pull the trigger on Ginsu.
Please add pics of your new hosta for 2010.
Next up the Sophomores.

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Wow, they are all beautiful. Do you not have evil things like slugs and hail in MN, Paul? None of mine are in any condition to be photographed, sadly, but I am really looking forward to next year. There is always next year.
Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Looking good for first year plants. My Captain Kirk isn't quite that big as a second year plant.
My new ones grew in number - I had planned to acquire only a few but ended up with 16 new ones although they are mostly very small ones.

And the last three. I may still receive Mousetrap which was back ordered and my supplier is still trying to get a proper Liberty Bell for me. I'm running out of room in my garden. There are several plants that will have to go.

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Noreaster - Hail was last year (sad, but got new shingles and siding out of it) and slugs definitely. Been very wet here after a stretch of drier years - so a bit concerned next year will be the Year of the Slug.
ViolaAnn - Blue Ivory made a nice transition in second year with broader leaves and so far the greening up of the white has been delayed.
Captain Kirk was a 4 division purchase off a mature plant from a local hosta collector -- and I'm thrilled it looks this nice already. Alex Summers and Alligator Shoes were also from the same collection.

Paul, they are looking goodm a really great group! I like your presentation, too.
I have way too many to fit in a group photo for the new class here.
Something happened to my vow to only add 3 or 4 new ones this year.
I'm even afraid to count..but I can say that many of them were gifts or trades....
Some are in the ground in the holding bed, but I need to move a few more OUT of the
holding bed and into the garden, so I can put the rest in....
and it's just too hot to work outside.
ViolaAnn, you have the right idea..just keep getting smaller and smaller hostas!

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
ViolaAnn or anyone for that mattter,
My mother picked up a nice pot of blue ivory this spring and while I was planting it, I severed an eye out for myself. Nice guy ey! Anywho, I've noticed that my specimen has some green/blue flecking showing up in the white margins. I noticed ViolaAnn's has the same "condtion". Is this typical of this hosta or should I be worried about HVX? I checked the library but the pictures there don't show this flecking.
Awesome collection ViolaAnn!
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Chris - I believe that's typical of the cultivar. haven't had mine long enough to make big pronouncements though. I've been surprised in the past to see plants look TOTALLY different in subsequent years. I think sometimes it's youth and sometimes it has to do with the conditions in the nursery where it originated that first year.

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
I agree with Ann, although I'm certainly no expert--my 'Blue Ivory' has speckling, too, and it doesn't resemble anything HVX-related to me. It's just the way this plant is. This was my 'Blue Ivory' when I first planted it this spring. You can already see the speckles starting to show up. (Looks like overspray from an airbrush to me.) They got more pronounced as the season progressed.

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Here are a few of my freshmen (and most of mine are freshmen, since this is only my second year at this house, and my first year really getting into hostas.)
'Rhino Hide'
'Vulcan'
'Mighty Mouse,' 'Blue Mouse Ears,' and 'Cat's Eye'

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
Are you sure that's 'Cat and Mouse above? - the one on the right? The total leaf structure looks different from the family.

The tag says "Cat's Eyes" so I think it was a typo.

Re: Freshman Class at Enabler U
I was gonna suggest 'Cat's Eyes' but I'm using my daughter's tiny net book and didn't have as good a look at it as I would have on my home computer. Good fit with the 'mice' though!
