Sad News

Post by renaldo75 »

For several years, kitgary has posted occaisionally & kept up on things here on Hallsons.
Gary has been battling lung cancer this year, and Thursday morning he passed away.

I first met Kit and Gary at a convention several years ago, and we have been at some of the same
events here in Iowa together. Last year at Roxanne's get-together and earlier this spring at Josh's Hosta & Dessert Social.
Gary always had a twinkle in his eye and we always had fun talking whenever we were in the same place. This year at Josh's
it was cold & pouring rain when he got out of the car and opened up his umbrella that was easily twice as big as mine.
I hollared over to him: 'That's a big-ass umbrella!' Without missing a beat he said: 'Well I've got a big ass.'
I've laughed about that all summer!!

Gary and Kit got into hybridizing and growing seeds several years ago, and he brought me a beautifully streaked 'Lakesde Mom'
seedling when he came to my party in July. Every time I look at it I think how hard it would be to let go of a seedling that looks
that good. It was pretty special to me before, and it's even more special to me now.

Kit & Gary live in Springville which is about 15 mi east of Cedar Rapids, IA. Funeral services are Tuesday in Cedar Rapids.
There is a family evening on Monday.

The 1st pic is one taken by Jeff White of Gary at my party in Ankeny at the end of July. He looked so good that day, and I know he
had a wonderful time.

The 2nd pic was one I found of him online. It was taken in Feb. of this year at a garden fair in Cedar Rapids w/some of his seedlings.

Thanks for the prayers and kind words everyone.
I'm planning to attend the funeral tomorrow.
I'll let Kit know that everyone here has her in their thoughts.

I'll share what she wrote on the Hostaseedgrower's forum:
I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
We were lucky in that Gary had no discomfort at all. We were blessed to know that time was short and to savor every moment and keep the family close. He had hostas in his room and will, of course, have hosta leaves and pods on his casket! I had already planted some hosta seeds for him to watch, unfortunately they did not have time to sprout.
He really enjoyed all the time spent with the hosta community, online and in person. The day at Reldon's was a bright spot in his summer, as was the rainy, cold day at Josh's party!!!
He's not really gone..., he told me he was planning on haunting hosta events and anytime hosta people gather.

I am so sorry you lost your friend Reldon. I am glad though that you were able to spend some time with him before he passed. It is hard I know.

My sympathies to Kit and to Gary's friends and family. I had a few interactions with Gary on other hosta forums and he seemed like a warm person, both knowledgeable and willing to lend helpful advice. The hosta community has lost a true friend.

Reldon - Thank you for sharing sad news.

I liked Gary right away when we met.
It was an honor to know such a fine man.
I enjoyed visiting with him at your party, Josh's ice cream hosta social, and at that Master Gardener event in Cedar Rapids (second picture) this year. He kept me company that day inbetween classes. We talked "hosta".

Praying for Kit and all of Gary's family during this time of sadness & loss.

I didn't realize that the pic I found was from the MG thing you went to in CR.
Never made that connection. Neat that you got to hang out with Gary then. :)
