With great sadness....long live the queen

Post by putnamgardens »

Just got word the the Queen of Hosta is heading to heaven. Mildred Seaver has passed. She was only 98. A real peach of a charactor who will be missed yet her legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She was a friend of mine since 1993. We talked rings in a tour garden and bonded instantly. I'm so glad our paths crossed in the garden. She is survived by her son, Charlie and twin daughter, Muriel. I'll post details when I hear. Later, Love, Lisa
P.S. I'll be comforted by my therapy dogs tonight

Mildred was such a gem! I always enjoyed talking to her at conventions. No one could top her stories! And what a collection of plants she left to us all. She will be missed.

So sad to hear. Viktoria, you're right...Mildred Seaver will live on in many a garden. I never had the good fortune to meet her. I hope all 98 of her years were lovely ones.

I just posted this from Charlie in the Memorial forum:
Mildred Seaver, one of the founders of the New England Hosta Society and a prolific hosta hybridizer for many years, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011 at age 98. She had a full life that was made richer by her many gardening friends, especially those who shared her love of hostas. In fact she often said she loved the people met through her gardening more than the plants, awards, etc.

A celebration of her life will be held from 10 AM -12 Noon on Saturday March 19th at Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Rd. Wilmington, DE., the retirement community where she had resided for the past 9 years. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mildred’s memory to the American Hosta Society, P. O. Box 7539, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. To send on-line condolences to the family visit http://www.mccreryandharra.com
I was so pleased that she visited my garden just two years ago, on one of the hottest days of the summer, making her presence known with every halting step. 'Queen of the Seas' is the centerpiece hosta in one of our beds, and deservedly so.

There are people who touch lives far outside their own immediate circle, just by being who they are and doing what they love.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Mildred, but a number of her introductions were foundation plants in my hosta garden.
Hosta 'Mildred Seaver' was one of the first named plants I bought, back in the late 80's. That time was BC (before computers)
in my life, and I had to go to the few books I could find about hosta back then to see who Mildred was.
My condolences to her family and friends. The whole hosta world will mourn her passing.

Here's the classy and entertaining obituary:

Love this:
Mildred was creative, unorthodox, irreverent, artistic, outspoken, incorrigible, flamboyant, funny, and eager to help people whether they wanted help or not.

They "nailed" her tribute. Exactly how I'd discribe her. Thanks for posting the obit. I've already made my facebook wall post of my tribute to her.
