Need help with an ID

Post by redcrx »

My neighbor has this bunch growing for decades. It sits in full sun all day. It's late in flowering. Petiole is plain green.

Hi Ed,

It is good old Lancifolia. At the very base the back of the petioles should be a little reddish, and looking out my window mine are flowering right now too.

Thanks Chris.

I couldn't get a good photo of the base for comparison - I was reluctant to yank out a neighbor's plant.

I wouldn't worry about it. Lancifolia is such an old common one that I'm sure that's it.

Lancifolia Thats what came to my mind too. I used to have it in my garden before I moved. An old and reliable hosta.

I was working on a topic today - clausa normalis - and while tracking back a couple of Pieter's threads I came across a one:
http://www.perennialnursery.com/forums/ ... is#p439192
that looked at lancifolia and cathayana.

The plant I was looking at in this topic put out tons of seed pods. I have planted some but haven't seen anything pop yet. Would seed pods indicate it's cathayana and not lancifolia?
