I am giving up growing hostas in MD. The deer herd in our neighborhood is so large and the fact that we leave our place for the summer is a recipe for hosta disaster even if they are sprayed regularly. What the deer don't get the voles do. I have prepared a bed about 12' X 15' at our place in Michigan that is zone 4 which will be shaded . Our summers are cooler than a lot of places and the hostas that I do have in the sun there have done well except the Patriots get a little pale and the Krossa Regals are not as bright by the end of the summer. Great Expectations, Sum and Substance, Liberty, Stilletto, Wide Brim, Halcyon, Sagae and Golden Tiara do really well in almost a full day of sun.
Please supply any feedback on sun tolerance for these hostas because I have so little shade that the ones that need the most shade will get placed in that small bed I have created. Probably would be even easier to denote the ones that really need to be in 80% shade. Thanks so much!

Re: Which of these hostas will tolerate sun
I don't have them all, but,
Aristocrat - will turn green. Mine got a lot of sun this past year and wasn't happy, though it does like SOME morning sun.
Remember Me - gets a bit of morning sun and does well
Cameo - i have it in dark shade.
Paul's Glory - gets some morning sun. it does very well
Cutting Edge - gets a bit less morning sun than Paul's Glory and does well.
Gingko Craig - mine is in shade most of the time
Grand Tiara - in shade
Blue Mouse Ears - in shade
Allegan Fog - gets quite a bit of morning sun and does well.
So Sweet - mine sometimes gets quite a bit of sun in the afternoon and does well.
Marilyn Monroe - mine has a lot of shade
Praying Hands - mine doesn't get too much sun
Restless Sea - gets some sun and does well
Baby Bunting - mine is in quite a bit of shade - most blues probably like more shade

Re: Which of these hostas will tolerate sun
I don't have many of these, but I have Allegan Fog in almost full sun and it is growing vigorously and isn't burning. I have Praying Hands in quite a bit of sun as well and it's gotten quite large and really nice. I'm not sure if it's due to the sun or it's age, but I tend to think it's the sun it gets now. We had moved and previously it got heavy shade and never amounted to much, but now it is beautiful. I prefer to keep my blues in the heavier shade, as I think the color is better, but I do have Dorset Blue and Camelot in areas where they get some direct sun during the day and they look really good. My Empress Wu gets nearly full sun, but I've only had it two years now, so it's too soon to really tell what effect that will have on it.
