Japanese beetles on hostas?

Post by ViolaAnn »

Japanese beetles are relatively new here in Ottawa, having arrived only a few years ago. A couple of days ago, I found one on one of my hostas. I'm wondering if they bother hostas in general or if it was just happenstance that I found it there. I don't really need another thing to worry about.

We have lots of the beetles, but I've never seen them (or any damage from them) on hostas. The hibiscus are their faves here.

We've had major infestations here in NW Illinois for the last several years. I've seen them sitting on the blossoms at times, but they've never done any damage. They devastate many other plants in my garden. They chewed every single leaf off a very nice sized Japanese maple in 2011, and the entire top of it died. They also love hibiscus, roses, apple and flowering crab trees, flowering almond, ornamental plum, and my golden rain tree. Among other things.

My husband made a trap out of a gallon jug with a large hole cut opposite the handle. He put water, sugar, beer, and overripe watermelon and bananas. He caught so many Japanese beetles he had to toss them in the pond for the fish and turtles to eat.

I have never seen them on a hosta. I use Bayer Rose & Flower Care. Its pellets you sprinkle on the ground & the plants suck it up through their systems. It must taste terrible because the bugs don't bother the plants anymore. I used it one year and forgot about it for like 2 years and the beetles still stayed off. I use it on roses, hibiscus and fallopia. Bayer has a liquid I use on my super tall tulip tree for aphids. I think its called tree and shrub or something like that. Those two products are great and I highly recommend them.

It's funny I haven't seen many this season. Usually they are all over the place. But they don't bother the hosta. I had a wild grape vine they would go after.

Pretty sure we can't buy that product in Ontario.
