Is Captain Kirk that much different than Rainforest Sunrise

Post by redcrx »

Is anyone growing these two side-by-side. I'm looking in the hosta library and each plant has many different looks and some seem to cross-over.

I'm not growing them side by side, but there are major differences. Captain Kirk has much larger leaves, and is a larger plant overall (except that mine took a hard hit from a combination of drought and voles). Rainforest Sunrise is more upright in presentation, more corrugation.

Mine are practically side by side and nobody takes a second look at the big clump of Captain Kirk but everyone comments on Rainforest Sunrise.

Rainforest Sunrise develops into a low, flat clump with upright, cupped leaves. My old clump is probably about 15" tall and about 2 1/2 feet wide.

Captain Kirk is a 30" tall and 36" wide, mounding clump. The margins are wider and the yellow isn't as bright.

Do you think you have a mixup with something Ed?

Thanks Chris, but no - my mind was on something else that has been bothering me for years and I got my hosta mixed-up. Not that I don't see the difference my brain was just in a different place.

Just revisiting an old question.
Here is my Captain Kirk yesterday growing in bright shade.

And here is a plant that was labeled Rainforest Sunrise but I always thought for some reason that it was Captain Kirk. This plant is in bright shade but will get some sun.

Was the label wrong or am I wrong?

Whoops - just noticed I have a Rainforest Sunrise in a trough. Here's a photo from last season.

And here is a photo from today. That's Cinnamon Sticks on the left and an Art Wrede seedling #102 on the right. There is an odd semi-circle of leaf damage between the seedling and Rainforest Sunrise. I tracked it to a pine cone going between them.

Hi Ed,

The second picture was a hosta that was mislabeled. So yes, you have two Captain Kirk.

Thanks Chris. That's a plant that's been bothering me for years - when you order out of a catalog and get something else. It is planted near Starship.
