First noses coming op in the Hostadream garden

Hi, today i took a pic of the outcoming noses from H.clausa normalis.
This is here the first Hosta that's not can wait !!

Hey George, mayby they have now chilblains

We have here in Belgium (Europe) a very soft winter, now today is it 11° !!

Dirk, we were having a very mild winter too until mid-January when Mother Nature remembered what a Buffalo winter was supposed to be like. Right now it's 12 degrees F (-11 C).

I did just a walk with my dog and i see many plants are almost open the buds.

I hope it stay that way in Belgium

Here it have been extremly mild too.... until Wednesday where it started to snow in the northern part. It was warned by the weather people so the day before I walked the garden with an eye at soil level....

I had noses, real noses, not the hairy ones, not the starting to unfuling ones... more than a month to early... covered them up with chicken grit.
It continued to snow in the northern parts.. 1000 + cars needed road assistance.. roffs broke down on several sports arenas, some other roofs and wals broke too..

Going from Copenhagen with a little less of a foot of snow.. no problem if it had not been for the hard wind making huge drifts and continued with snow to the end of the island... crossing Fyn ( where I live) with no sight of snow and then one more bridge to Jylland ... witch had snow from north of the bridge

shaking my head.. never seen so sharp lines before
Here we got a cold windy rain until Friday when we got one inch of snow and then icy rain on top of it

Now it is all melting

So check the weather report... they say it might come back in a week

And I will have about two more months before I start seeing hosta eyes coming up in my garden.

In the meantime I will look at all the wonderful pics on the forum and try to be patient. We've still got lots of winter weather to deal with. Expecting a freezing rain/snow tonight.

Yes Indeed, i keep the wheathermen in sight !!
But untill now no winter to see !!
The hardly month is begin april to +- 15 april.
The noses unrolling to leafs and if are nightfrost...

Thats the real devil i mean...
Here a picture of the compost i made last year and now working as a blanket for the upcuming noses.
I do that now and i give the Hosta's also the first time food because the noses are swelling and taken the food up.
They have then a very good start to growing up!!

It works also a little bit agains slugs.

I hope you can keep your hosta noses safe, Dirk!! If they were in my garden, they would be cold & shivering after the rain & snow yesterday.

Last year or the year before I tried covering several plantagenias that were coming up too early with potting soil. I hoped it would slow them down & keep them safe. It didn't work very well though.

They are in a location that receives a lot of midday sun & the extra soil retained the heat and actually seemed to accelerate their growth. Not much I could do when the March temp was above 80F for a week or more. Maybe I should have spraypainted the soil white to make it a reflective surface. Like the top of a UPS truck.

Hi Renaldo, for the Hostas coming to early i place a container obove the noses when it can frozen that night.
So you keep the noses frostfree for these Hostas !!

You have to wait and see what these people do for frost protection

up to several hundreds of pots and plastic tents .. it sure look like sciense to me

Lot of Brittish people swear fleece blankets are good and can be placed right on the top of the plants... I tried it with my treepeony witch is starting to unfurl... no problem... but the others without the blankets didn't have problems either, so...

they are just hardy enough

Hope you and the hostas will stay warm

I look forward to somewath the people are do to protect the noses.
Here is it almost every year the same way...
In the first 3 weeks of april sometimes nightfrost

But we are hopeful to a new season of beautiful Hostas !!

Normally we skip frosts mid April here... but last year was not normal

Yes indeed Pia, they are rests of making my house.
These are cavityhooks with the press button to keep the isolation to the innerwall.
The plastic is very good against wheatherchangeling and sun. There are markers they did all 10 years service and they not expensive.
Use also a good permanent marker, i use a black Pentel Maxiflo, the ink is not shining away through the sun.

Wow, what a wonderful sight! Especially after yesterday’s blizzard and freezing rain basically closed this area...the expressway is open (sort of) but the side roads are impassable.

Ok, I am one of those folks who has to cover/uncover the emerging eyes...until the second week of June for the past few years!!! Last year our last hard freeze (not frost, freeze) was May 27...but the hosta emerge in early April. At least it is easier and faster now that I have “almost” enough of the plastic water line hoops and stacks of plastic sheeting to cover everything. Need to get more waterline to cut more hoops and pick up more plastic soon.

Another belgian hosta-guy here with noses sticking out.

The first hosta-noses over here are from Hosta Calypso

Hi Tom, i think that here in Begium the first Hosta outside in leaves is H.longipes Sparsa. Danny from Hostacollectie he's get one i mean.
Maybe he seeing this and he place a pic from sparsa on the forum.

I saw today my Albomarginatas starting to poke up. We have had snow on since 1st week of January until 6 days ago. Temps went to upper 50's about 5 days, but now in 30's again. I was very surprised to see the tips sprouting today. It is supposed to be much cooler for a week or so, so maybe it will slow them down... I hope. I have about a dozen hosta in pots dormant in the greenhouse. Or they were dormant! Yesterday I watered everything and about half of them are up an inch or more! I was surprised. I need to bring them into the light so they grow properly. Spring is coming!!!!

Looked in an old post from April the 5. last year.. at that time I only had a few noses up... that was a laate spring

... and this year several mid February.. that's scary early

So ... get the feeling i am hard to please

Wanda, I'm sorry about your blizzard. I feel your pain. I guess it really isn't that early for noses to be showing here in Kansas. Many times I see them 1st week of March. I guess it doesn't seem that late since we have had so much snow....
