Pic of the Day--Garden Tour 16

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Here are the last two pix of the area that runs behind our house. It is on the far north of our property. This is a heavily shaded area that only gets dabbled sun, at best. The perennials were planted in 2003 although the sedum ground cover had been there for a few years before that. The pix are from 2005.

Man that's steep!! But it looks wonderful!! :P

Thanks for sharing all of your landscape pics, Hank. It was especially interesting to see what the place looked like before you transformed it into your hosta paradise.

Hank,
I'm sitting here wondering what adjectives to use that haven't already been overdone. I guess I'll just say thanks once again for sharing the results of your hard work with us.

Hmmm...yeah...we need some new adjectives....

Great photos, again, Hank. Also, thanks for the close-up of Sedum 'Acre' in one of your other posts. Seeing it up close it is kinda 'scary' in an invasive sort of way. It looks alot like a blue sedum I had a few years ago....scary. Having seen it in your other photo though, I think I am going to give it a try somewhere. I have already found a local nursery that has it. Thanks!

Wow! You must have extremely fertile soil! I can hardly believe that the perennials were only two years old in that pic. They certainly do like their home there.
Such a beautiful area. :D

Hank, do you have a photo posted somewhere you have a more wide-angled shot of your property...so we could see how the hosta beds lay oaround the house?

Charla--The way our land and gardens are layed out it is impossible to show everything in one or two shots. If a person were to go back to the POTD Garden Tour 1 and then look at each psoting in sequence, you would get a fair idea of how the various areas tie together. However, here are three sequential shots of our "south lawn" area. The POTD Garden Tour 20 shows an area that is at the left side of the first of the following three pix. These pix contain the areas of the garden that I'll be showing coming up in the POTD series.

Wow!! I will go back and look at all the posts. Those look like walnut trees? I thought most conifer, spruce-type trees wouldn't grow around walnut trees?

We have black walnut trees all over the place and, as far as we can figure out, have never had a problems with any of our 800 varieties of perennials. I did a little research on this a number of years ago and black walnut trees only affect a couple of genera of plants.

Boy! I sure get conflicting information on the black walnut issue! There are list after list that show things that have problems under walnuts, but they are all different! I have had so many times when I have grown something in the greenhouse, or purchased something that did just great till I put it in the ground! My hostas do great, the heuchera do well (mostly), grasses and carex, okay, ferns, some okay, and other things just start wilting and dying the minute they hit the dirt! Chris replied on another post and said he can grow most anything under his walnut trees, too. I have conditioned the soil, good drainage, yada yada. You said only a couple of genera of plants won't grow under walnuts, what are they? Maybe those are the ones I always pick....I am not yet willing to admit that it is my gardening skills...

Charla--The one I seem to remember is the nightshade family but I'd suggest you Google it to get better information.
