Pic of the Day--Garden Tour 20

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--We have several sets of steps that go from our south lawn up to the woodland path that has been in the last couple of pix. This shot was taken while standing in the lawn near the north end of the path. The bench that was in the last couple of pix is off camera on the far left. Most of the hostas in the area are seedlings of mine except for those that are immediately above the row of rock edging.

What a beautiful setting for the plants.

Since you face the Mississippi River on a hillside, do most of the plants all get late afternoon sun?

Hi--Because we are on the west facing side of a steep bluff, the sun does not begin to hit our garden until 10:00 to 11:00. Most of the garden is under a canopy of mature trees. There are a few spots that are open to the sky but, except for the area in POTD 2 and 3, most areas receive from dabbled light to maybe 3-4 hours of sun. Here is a photo taken several hundred feet out in the Mississippi River that shows where our home is located. You can see the angled driveway that leads up to our home. The canopy of trees also provides shade in the late afternoon.

What a wonderful view from the river! I suppose you never have to worry about flooding since you're up so high?
I've always loved the idea of living near a river. So peaceful. :)

Joan--I suppose it is conceivable that the highway that runs in front of home could get covered with flood water but I think it would have to be a "thousand year" flood. The worst flooding in my lifetime occured in 1965 and 1993. The highway was never in danger.

Nice picture from the Mississippi!
Do you ever get over to Westby to eat at Borgen's?
The Norwegian meatballs and homemade pies are worth a visit to your part of the state.

wzbt03--I think I' was there several years ago. However, when I go in that direction, it is usually to go to Viroqua. If you make it as far as Westby this summer, you should come the extra 20 miles and stop in here for a visit.

This Year

Post by wzbt03 »

It will be Norwegian Meatballs, homemade pie and hostas this year then!
Better see the gardens first so I won't be slowed down by a big meal.

What is in Viroqua?
