Never had a fern randomly sprout in my seedlings before. :)

Gosh, I wish I would get a fern, all I get is green slimey yuck growing on top. It gets all hard and won't let the air get to the soil. I am always taking my little toothpick to the top and kind of cultivating around the seedlings.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the green slime. Here's a closeup of the same flat with the new fern. I have the slime too, as I do every year. Image

I actually think the stuff keeps the soil nice and moist. (It's algae, I assume?) Here's a pic of the whole flat. It's most certainly not affected badly from the slime! :D

You also have a nice liverwort growing next to the fern.
The lettuce-like one. They seem happy together!

So that's what those things are called... A couple of the flats have them in there. Learn something new every day!
