Baby seedlings

I've started transplanting some of my seedlings planted from 2/21 to 2/29, and I took some pictures.

In the first picture in the left row the top two are 'Swoosh' x 'Riptide'; the bottom is 'Swoosh' x yingeri. The right row are 'Christmas Tree Gala' x 'Donahue Piecrust'. The third picture is a closeup of the bottom right seedling.

The second picture top two on the left are 'Swoosh' x tsushimensis 'Ogon'; the bottom left is 'Swoosh' x 'Mikawa-no-Yuki'. This cross in 2003 produced the plant that won me a blue ribbon at last year's First Look so I thought I'd try it again. The right row is 'Yellow Splash' x 'Blue Moon'.

Thy, the first of the seeds from my 2006 crosses and OP seed were planted on February 21, 2007. Remember in the US we have month, day, year (year optional if obvious). So 2/21 is February 21. The 2007 is implied.

Totally, Pia! I planted mine a full month before that and they aren't nearly that big! What is the parentage of these seedlings? They are very lovely, BTW....look like very sturdy ones....

You're right, Pia, I made a mistake. I should have said 1/21 -1/29. Time flies as you get older. Seems like only yesterday that I planted them.

The first year I planted Hosta seedlings, late in 1999, mostly from bought seed, we went on a winter vacation in early January during my wife's school intercession. It's when we usually go, when we do, because she teaches and it's cold here. It's a nice time to get away to someplace warm. Unfortunately, those seedlings didn't like my absence, and mostly died. Since then I plant during the second half of January or early February.

The seedlings you saw were planted on January 21. They emerged 10-14 days later. They get 24/7 fluorescent lighting after they emerge, but they can't grow quite that fast.

I make a lot of weird crosses, so my percentage of emerging seedlings for the number of seeds sown is low. The OP seeds do come up like weeds, though.

George, they look great! If these are from "weird" crosses, then I am gettin' to like weird more all the time! Keep us updated with pics, please.

Charla, one I'm really waiting to grow some more is a seedling of mine from 2001 ('Neat Splash' x OP) x 'Quill', which Bob Kuk says is H. pycnophylla x H. yingeri. One seed was produced.

Yes, Charla. That's the closeup seedling in my latest "More Baby Seedlings" post.

That's why I say that I do some wierd crosses. Only one seed was produced in many; others 2-4.

Well, it was sure worth the effort!!! See what you get when the parent puts all its energy toward one baby! Keep up the good work!...and keep recording it and showing it to us!!
