Rod's seedling

Post by thehostagourmet »

Rod, you can't tease us like that with a beautifully streaked, great looking seedling without more information. What's the cross? How old is it?

Thanks all for the support with my addiction.
I did buy a Canon Rebel EOS which I am not very used to at all yet.
Give me a couple years.
I use a macro lens for the seedlings and a regular 100mm for the hosta.

The seedlings are 3 months old
tilly9 is a Dorset Glenn X Liberty Bell croos.
tilly14 a Dorset Clown X Beer Belly Blue cross
and tilly23 a Dorset Glenn X Beer Belly cross
and no these will not be in the compost beds.

Seedling heritage

Post by thehostagourmet »

Rod, I'm not familiar with Dorset Glenn, and I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Beer Belly and Beer Belly Blue are Rod's seedlings.

Why the Dorset Glenn X Liberty Bell cross? Liberty Bell is streaked too? For dark purple flowers?

They are all beautiful.

George,
I always make crosses in the garden with the plants I like.
If I don't like certain plants they are gone as I have no room for all of them I would say that 75% of my crosses are between streaked plants since that is what I have in the garden.
Here are a couple more from the same flats.
Thanks again and have a great springtime in the gardens.

Crosses

Post by thehostagourmet »

Rod, I too will make impromptu crosses while I'm walking around with my pollen containers, in addition to my planned crosses. I usually have a reason for making that cross. Sometimes it's just to see what happens, but usually to bring a trait from one of the parents into the hybrid. My question is what was in your mind when you made that cross?

Also, what are 'Dorset Glenn' and the 'Beer Belly' boys?

George if theres a Glenn in the hosta name. It's usally one Rod has registered. He likes the blue streakers as most of us do.He crosses his best blue hosta with the streaker of choice. So i would say the streaker of choice is from Dorset Clown. He crossed it with his favorite blue.Hope this helps. There are all beauties, Rod. I think my favorite is the heart-shaped one in the middle top of 017.jpg.

But I'm not going to be fussy; I like all of them.

Great pics, Rod!!! I had stumbled across your website a few months ago before I joined the forum. Beeeeeautiful! I absolutely fell in love with your "Fudge Ripple". Sooooo beautiful. It was what got me started on trying to grow from seed. These you posted are awesome, too. Thanks for sharing. :P
