Pic of the Day--Antioch
Hi All--Today's variety, Antioch, is one of the true classics that should be in every collection. A nice characteristic of Antioch is its ability to perform well in a variety of circumstances. The plant in the pic is growing in about 6 hours of mostly afternoon sun and it holds up very well to the end of the season. We have several other Antiochs in various shade conditions and they are all doing well. The plant in the pic is 53x23, within a few inches of its size for the last 6 years. Zilis lists it at 56x24. Slugs are only a minor problem, easily controlled.

I picked up a couple of Antiochs at the GLSOSS (Great Lyndale Shady Oaks Selloff Sale) in 2002. My only filed photos are from 2003 and 2004.
Some people might consider these pics as evidence of hosta abuse... I prefer to think of them as testimonials to the hardiness of some of the great old standards.
I was totally out of room in 2002, and still needed to find spots for an additional 100 or so varieties. Some of the old standards - several of the Fortunei family and Antioch, ended up getting plopped into spaces cleared among the daylilies and iris and spreading chives in a shady border, right at the roots of a wall of arborvitae. NOT ideal hosta habitat.
Antioch is an oldie... its been around since the 1920s. Zilis gives a nice history on it. One of its interesting features is the way the margin can be quite wide in the top part of the leaf and much narrower toward the base.
Anyway, one on the short list for "best white margined hosta" (way ahead of Patriot... )

Here's a pic from a few years ago, in early May when the margins were still more yellow. This one grows fast, but went into a decline from root competition after this year. We moved it last year and it's already making a huge comeback.

Antioch...Why do I always forget about this one when thinking of my favorites? I moved it a couple of years ago so that it's right by the path to the front porch. I think this hosta looks great planted on a slope, with that flowing mound. The margins on mine are variable in width, and it looks good all year. I'm including a pic of the great fall color Antioch shows some years.

Yep, that's what I'm talkin' about, Hank! How can you beat a 'waterfall' of hosta foliage?

And here's my Antioch two years later, after having been moved. It seems to have settled with getting less water now too (my farthest bed = my least attention).
