Joan - I don't think mine has ever gotten ratty. Even this last year when I had it sitting in just the clump of dirt I dug it out of the ground with sitting in a low bowl-type pot. And more of the roots kept showing every time I watered. It still looked good in spite of my callous neglect..... And then when it blooms it sure is something!! There's something about yingeri-type blooms that make me smile whenever I see them.
