Into the Black/B&B

Post by leafmould »

:P Last summer I selfed a four tepaled/four stamens flower on a 'Black Star' x 'Black Star sister'.
This cross produced a large pod full of fertile seeds. The first one bloomed today ! No i didn't get a four petaled flower but I did get something very exciting!...
This flower is the first in my dark line of hosta flowers to show NO purple when viewed with the human eye.
Most daylillies that are called black really are just a dark shade of purple, I think Iris is almost there. A pure black flower is very difficult to achieve..but on a hosta ?
I photographed this seedling in natural light, artificial light, full sun to see if I can capture purple.
The base of the flower can look like a dark mahogany in full sun but the outer corona still looks black.
With macro in full sun, I can see a small purple edge around the white 'Star'markings on the outside flower.
SO...by next summer I will have a pure BLACK flower on a hosta, how cool is that ?

Black?

Leafy, they remind me of grape gum drops or jelly beans more than licorice ones. They do look like "black" grapes in color.

Now you're going to tell me that the plant is bright yellow too.

Black has always been my favorite non-color. 8-) What does the throat look like?
