Name that hosta...

Post by eastwood2007 »

Can anyone tell me what they think the hosta in the upper left corner might be? It was a gift from someone who didn't know its name. I'd like to know as it is very vigorous and puts on large white very fragrant flowers. It is so awesome, I feel badly it doesn't have a name. :hmm:

My 1st guess would be Royal Standard from the form & leaves. Are the blooms 3-4" long & white??

10:1 odds on Royal Standard. Was this from a planting with some age behind it?

This one's an adjunct to the Dirty Dozen at the FAQ site.

It was from an old planting, it was given to my friend in the early 90's and as she doesn't buy hostas I would say it is probably safe from HVX...I couldn't find the post you referenced, but I might guess the dirty dozen is something to do with virus?

No, the Dirty Dozen is what I called the "most likely candidates for no-name hostas" at the Hosta FAQ site. (on page 2)

However, Royal Standard is one of the hostas quite likely to be infected with HVX in current trade. It shows a most tell-tale unpleasant corrugation of the leaves when infected.

After looking up Royal Standard on HL, I think that is the most likely. I'll have to watch it closer this year for flower type, as the leaves look a little like plantaginea, also. Thanks everyone! I am glad I have an old one as it really is beautiful! :D

Hi Charla,
Since this is off a 20 year old plant I wouldn't worry about it having the virus. But I do agree that it's Royal Standard :D

I agree, Royal Standard. Give it plenty of room, and prepare to be amazed by the flower disply. I love this plant so much that I have maybe 7 of them scattered throughout my garden.
