We have a bee keeper next door, and he also was telling us his bee count was down something like 75%. I forget what he told me caused it, I think he said a fungus, but I'm not sure, and he just left for 3 weeks to Europe. It's too bad, not only for the plants, but we get wonderful fresh, locasl honey from him twice a year :(

Druff I have to tell you...there was a clip on the news last night (Metropolitan NYC station) that talked about the tragedy of the honey bee in America. They're saying studies may be showing that the signal transmission of the cell phones is disorienting the bees and they can't find their way back to the hive.

It was just too wierd watching that after reading the article you posted. They said that they thought it was a virus, then a mite, but now they think its this.

i think they brushed on that in the article. but now they have some samples of bee bodies to work with, its more likely fungus/virus related. but i did find it curious that it is happening in other countries. i hope they figure it out soon. or the price of fruits and veggies could sky rocket.

but for me. it might mean i can pollinate some of my hosta before the bees get to them. but i'd rather have bees.

I noticed the price of canned peaches went up considerably....I think for the 12-oz size it was $1.80.

Bees

Post by Liselotte »

Just yesterday I read an article on the problem. Here in Switzerland about 30 % of Bees were lost during winter, no explanation found yet.I have noticed that there are hardly any bees around this spring and though this was local. We had an unusual winter, much too warm!

Sad story - I hope they're able to determine the cause[s]. I'm guessing it might be more than one thing or a combination of things since it's discovered to be so widespread. You might want to stock up on honey as well...
