local nursery visit

Post by MollyD »

Hi,

I went to a local (Victor,NY) nursery that has a pretty good reputation and bought some hostas while I was there.

I got Wide Brim (is this a medium or a large?)
some mini's:
Golden Prayers
Cracker Crumbs
Lakeside Cupcake

I have an old metal horse trough (oval shape). Last year I sprayed it on the outside with a stone paint. Gives the look and texture of stone. I removed it's plug and I've been placing rocks on the bottom. I'm going to fill the upper 2/3 rds with a mix of top soil, Pro Mix, organic stuff and a little sand. All those little hostas are going to get planted in there along with my unknown mini and a Stella De Oro daylily which is 11" tall. I also bought a trailing plant with tiny white flowers for this grouping.

Molly, your trough sounds wonderful, but don't use topsoil in a container. Substitute pine bark mulch or fines, provides better drainage and aeration in the root zone.

Your Choices

Post by wzbt03 »

Nice choices - they should look very nice when you plant them.

Wide Brim will end up a Medium Large but mine always look just Medium.
They are the ones that you will pick out from 50 feet away.

Goodluck with your project!
