new critters--help!

Post by hostasilly »

Last evening I was strolling the hosta of the year patch & I noticed smal ant like critters busily chewing away on guacomole & stained glass. The eyes had just come up last week & were looking great then I noticed a decline. Now they are so sad. Last nite is the first time I saw the critters though. What are they & what needs to be done. Other hostas are untouched.

The offenders likely are weavils. Make sure you have lots of those shiny black beetles around, they feast on weavils apparently. You might want to look here for more information and pictures for comparison with what you actually saw: http://hostafaq.westside.com/wsContentP ... w?RowId=37

Yeah, probably weavils. I've had them before. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate with an insecticide after dark when they're active.
