A few from today 5/8

Post by caliloo »

Sagae will always be in my top 5 all time favorites.

Medusa is rapidly becoming a favorite. This one has doubled since last year and stayed really bright and nice for me all season.

Topaz - haven't heard a lot about this one. Beautiful powdery blue with white leaf backs.
Image

Spilt Milk - I just don't get the appeal.... not attractive at all IMHO.
Image

Blue Clown - new last year. Looking forward to it putting on some growth.

Thanks for looking!

Medusa will have to be on my list - very nice.

I've got a nice spot right over here--------> for that Spilt Milk if you don't want it! :D After looking splendid all of last year, it just decided not to come up at all this year! Your plants are lovely.

Topaz is one of Iowa hybridizer, Greg Johnson's intros. It's a really nice medium blue color that stays that way most of the season. It fits in nicely with a group of Tardianas I have in one bed. And the bonus with Topaz is that it's fast growing for a blue. I got it and another of Greg's intros - Tequila Sunrise - at the same time in early 2003 before I even knew who he was. LOL Didn't even know they were from the same hybridizer until later - or that he was in one hosta club I joined. :???:

Mooie beat me to it, but I could offer that nice Spilt Milk a good home too. Mine is still alive - sending up 2 or 3 tiny eyes after the cold weather. It'll be 10 years [at least] before it ever comes close to looking as good as the one you don't care for....

I may have to consider Medusa now. Never appealed to me from other photos I have seen. But, yours looks very nice!

Thanks everyone!

I think what I don't like about Spilt Milk is that the misting looks like half washed off bird poop to me.... If it wasn't misted, just puckery I would probably love it, but then it would't be "milk" either  BTW - this one is 3rd year in my garden so I guess it is "leaping".

Thanks for the info on Topaz, Reldon. I really like it a lot and think it should be more popular. It is a good grouwer for me too.

I'm glad everyone likes Medusa too - I think it is just terrific!

Thanks again for all the nice comments

Another interesting thing about Topaz is that it is a seedling out of the same pod that Everlasting Love is from. Everlasting Love is variegated - green w/a cream margin. And when Mark Zilis spoke to the ROHS group several years ago, he said that it was Topaz & Everlasting Love that were on the cover of The Hosta Handbook. Pic was taken in Greg Johnson's garden. I'd always wondered what the hostas on the cover were & there's no identification in the book.
