Pic of the Day--Ground Master

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--I am still in the Loser's Lane part of our garden. This bad trip has only two more stops to go before we can get back to the 98% of the tour around the attractive hostas. Ground Master is a variety I purchased back in 1994 when I was just getting addicted to hostas. It took several years before it dawned on me that there might be some hostas that weren't worth the compost to plant them in. Ground Master starts out the season looking OK but soon starts a downward slide of burning and tearing, similar to its Loser's Lane neighbors. Maybe I got a plant with bad genes; Zilis gives this plant favorable comments and lists its size at 40x16. My plant has averaged about 34x10. Slugs are the only thing drawn to this variety. Both photos are from 2003, the first taken in late June, the second taken in late September.

Icky...now there's a word that could be used more often down on Loser's Lane.

Got one

I bought one of these at a farm greenhouse and it turned out to be something else.
If possible it is less attractive then what it should have been.

I have given it a spot worse then Losers Lane - under a bench where no one can see it.
