Post by John »

This one came to me with the garden name "Aunt Maxine's" from a friend on this forum, who was amused to see that years later I am still listing it under that name. Can anyone identify this hosta? It has very nice blue coloring. Thanks!

John, that really doesn't look very blue.

I grow hyacinthina, this is much smaller and less textured. Thanks, though!

It is actually bluer than the photo suggests, George.

I still vote for Hyacinthina. The pencil-thin white line on the leaf edge (not variegation, just a light effect) is a give-away.

Wait for this one and your "real" one to bloom.

I thought it was Hyacinthina too.

For years, I didn't know what mine was. The place I ordered it from called it Blue Hosta.

Thanks, guys, but it is about 1/4 the size of hyacintha, and has none of the same texture to the leaves. Guess I'll have to post flowers as soon as it blooms.

This looks surprisingly like MY MYSTERY HOSTA! I would categorize mine as a bluish color as well although it is definitely a blue-green.

John, how old is the particular division you posted the picture of? It sure reminds me of an immature Hyacinthina division, and as you know, 'H' shows a very different colouration in shade versus part or full sun. What sort of light is it in? And it is amazing how the mature plantings of 'H' I have all show a surprising amount of cupping and since most of them are in the shade they sometimes have a colour that's almost black!

Pieter, the plant is about 5 or 6 years old. It is in mostly shade, as is my Hyacinthina. The unknown is bluer than Hyacinthina, and the leaves are much smoother.
