Does anyone grow Rickrack?

Post by Linda P »

We had a discussion about Rickrack on Saturday. Does it have red petioles? I got mine in a secret trade in 03. It's grown nicely, and is starting to develop more ruffling on the leaf edges this year.
So, is this Rickrack? Should it have more red on the petioles?

I'll look tomorrow, Linda, but I don't remember any red. But...I don't think that is Rickrack :???: The leaves are too wide and the ruffles too small. Your plant looks a bit like Party Favor.

I agree. My leaves are narrower and the tip much pointier. The overall habit of mine is a little big higher "arching" too.

The plant you have is lovely but mine looks different.
Help! I'm being held hostage!

Linda, I just went out to look, and my Rickrack doesn't have any red. I don't think what you have is it, either.
O.K. found a picture of it from 2004. I think I will move it this weekend, since its buried under other hostas, and divide it at the same time. I think I liked it as a young plant more.

Thanks! I haven't been able to find any info on vein pairs, size of leaf, etc. Barabara, it looks like yours has white backs?
Josh, it does more closely resemble the Party Favor pics at the HL than it does Rickrack.
So, it looks like I'll take Rickrack off the list and substitue another NOID. I've wondered for a long time about this one, since it never quite looked like it should. I don't seem to have a pic of it when it was younger, but it never did have those deep edge ruffles.
Thanks again!

'Rickrack' with 'Party Favor'

Post by barbara »

Linda, I wouldn't say Rickrack has white backs. Think its just the flash and time of day that gave the illusion. Party Favor is in full bloom right now in my garden, so I think it would be so for you too.

The Lemke's file on Rickrack says it has 9 vein pairs. The leaf shape is "lance" and the flowers a deep purple, so I'd say what you have is not Rickrack. It's a very pretty hosta though.
Hope that info helps. :)

Thanks, Joan. I missed the vein pairs on the Lemke file.
It is in bloom right now, but this one got hit pretty hard with the cold weather, and is struggling a little bit. One stalk bloomed and is done, and now there is another one coming. They are definitely not purple, more like lilac.
I'm not sure it's Party Favor, either, though it does look more likely than Rickrack for an id on this one. So, now do I go out and look for Rickrack so I don't have to change my list? Or just bit the bullet and wipe it out.
Oh, and then I'll have to get Party Favor, too, so I can compare it to this NOID. Ah, the trials we must face for our hosta gardens. sigh.

How about Green Fountain or Grand Canyon?

Hmmm...did some more measuring and research.
It's not Party Favor, or Green Fountain.
The plant is 4 years old. It's 13" tall by 42" wide. The average leaf is 5 1/2 X 9 1/2. It has a very pointy, twisted tip, is dull green on the top and bottom. The veins are quite prominent on the back, and it has 9 pairs. The base is cordate, and the leaf is more undulate than pie-crusted.
The flowers are very pale lavendar, fertile, and blooming now, on a 26" scape .
It's not Permanent Wave, Grand Canyon, Undulata Erromena, Honeybells, or Elizabeth, all of which I have to compare it with.
Thanks for the suggestions. That helps me to narrow down the field! Anyone else have any ideas?
