Pic of the Day--Joshua's Banner

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--I'm probably guilty of hosta abuse with the way that I have allowed Joshua's Banner to be treated since I got it in 2002. Oh, my intentions were good when I planted it in a spot that gets maybe an hour of direct sun. But I failed to consider how fast the near-by native ginger (Asarum canadense) might grow. The ginger had been over-growing JB and the result was a mis-shaped hosta that probably had it's growth stunted for its first two years until I finally removed the ginger. I had planted it next to Lady Isobel Barnett, incorrectly believing that LIB was destined to be a medium sized variety. The Lady has been encroaching on Joshua's Banner space more and more as she grows to a very large size. So, all things considered, it has done pretty well. Its measurements have been 11x5, 18x7, 23x10, 27x12, 34x13 and 35x12. That puts it right in line with Lemke's listing of 36x15 for a mature plant.

It looks like it has it's own spotlight in that last picture! And yes, it's looking very good considering it's past! Thanks for sharing it! :D

Hank,

What a beautiful hosta. How old and how big is your LIB? It must be huge!

I think it brightens up that little corner quite nicely, IMO 8-)

Oh my. That is one big hosta. I got mine in 2005 I think, and it is big, but nowhere near that big. I'll have to go out and measure it when the rain lets up.
