Pic of the Day--Bridegroom

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--From time to time I have commented on the name of a hosta. But one has to wonder where today's variety, Bridegroom, got it's name. It's unique, sharply upturned leaf ends bring to mind 'Ski Slope' but that name must have been taken. I mean, why not 'Oil Derrick' or 'Fire Hydrant' or 'Banana Bunch'? But 'Bridegroom'? I just don't get it.

Bridegroom has been passing the 10 foot rule in our garden since 2002. Growing in a spot that gets several hours of afternoon sun, its size has expanded from 9x5 to 11x7, 20x11, 18x10, 28x12, and this year, 32x11, still short of the 34x16 size expected at maturity. But we all know that size does not really matter.

but I must have gotten duds... mine have never gotten past a foot in size either way and are about the same age. This year, about 1/4 of that. I would swear it was a mini... both in the ground and in a pot.

Oh, but it does matter Hank! Just look at the disappointment that DryGulch has as a result of his 'mini dud'!

I'll take that wink emoticon for what it's worth, Hank. Bridegroom is among the most distinctive all-green plants of recent hosta history. Grows great and blooms great too.

That is pretty!

Hank, I wondered about the name Bridal Veil also. My BV looks alot like Abba except it has a thinner edge and it is white not yellow/cream like Abba! Maybe whomever named these had a wedding in the future

I love BG but I noticed it seems to goes dormant pretty early in the season. Last year it was gone by September. Do you have the same experience?

Hi--Frankly, I don't remember anything different about BG going dormant early, or late. I think I would remember if it was gone by early September.
