Big Dollar

Post by wzbt03 »

I think the ones that go for the most money right now are the breeders.
Most of the well known breeders you will find in the Hosta Library.
Some like the one pictured are pretty much one of a kind.
The one pictured is a Chastain Lakeside Breeder that escaped Tennessee just before she started auctioning them this summer.

That's a real beauty, wz. Is it setting pods this year?

Not this year

Post by wzbt03 »

No, not this year. Mary seemed to know it would not set pods this year before we closed our deal.
She has a lot of faith in how this one will do, so I can wait.
It came from her Streaked Roy El plants and crossed with her favorite blue Seedling.

A good way to find out which are the pricy (rare) ones is to watch the big fundraising auctions: First Look and the American Hosta Society. Or get the catalogs or go to the websites of growers.

A couple I want and can’t afford yet are Warwick Comet and Shadowfax...and they are less than $250 each.

The really special ones usually can’t even be bought (yet)...you have to know somebody and have something of similar quality to trade. And be trustworthy enough not to run right out and TC it...

I have spent quite a bit - $100 for 'Shadowfax', $75 for 'Warwick Comet', and $75 for 'Made You Look'. I'm sure that if I waited another few years, the price would come down. (I passed on 'Alex Summers' one year at Wade-Gatton - it was $90. The next year it was $25.)

But I can't wait - hell, I might be dead in five years (morbid thinking, but who knows?). I want to get them in and GROWING!

Wheasie!
You said it girl!
I like your attitude: "But I can't wait - hell, I might be dead in five years (morbid thinking, but who knows?). I want to get them in and GROWING!"
I've spent more than I probably should on some hosta because I WANTED them growing in my garden. I wanted to see them and touch them and be able to stroll through the gardens at the end of a hard day and see something beautiful.

Most of the high ticket plants are breeders, if you don't plant to hybridize then beautify with old standards that are cheap.

I took 35 H.'Wide Brim' and made a big snake in the woods going around a couple of trees down the hill, you may not find wide brim mentioned on this forum over the last 3-4 years but it is a really nice dependable performer.
