Pic of the Day--Abiqua Drinking Gourd

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--If you are impressed with heavy substance and cupped blue leaves, Abiqua Drinking Gourd is your kind of hosta. This is another variety that we have growing along our woodland path, in full shade. I bought the plant in 2000. It has been slowly but steadily growing in our garden since then. Since 2001 it has measured 14x9, 25x15, 30x16, 36x17, 38x18, 42x21 and 44x20. That puts it close to Zilis' listing of 46x24 for a mature plant. With its great substance, ADG has had no slug problems. The photos are from 2002, 2004, and 2007.

I've had this hosta for 5 years and it has always looked great! It really got zapped by the late freeze we had and came back up looking like an infant. Then it got crown rot, and I thought I was going to lose it. After I use Milorganite and alfalfa on it about a month ago, it now looks like it is going to come out of it and be okay. Whew!

I'm still on the fence about this one. I like it, but there are soooooooooo many hosta and so little money in comparison to go around!
