First time ever, in at least a dozen years, the frost did not take the buds:

Gorgeous, Viktoria! I've never seen one of these actually in bloom. Is it just as fragrant as the single flowers? Phyllis

'White Fairy'

Post by viktoria »

Same fragrance, Phyllis.

'White Fairy' bloomed for me the last two years. It is like 'Aphrodite' but of different origin.

viktoria - where are you located?

Here in Ottawa, I was also lucky to have a giant bloom from mine at the end of August. Fragrant and glorious. It had a giant second bud, but I don't think it has actually opened. Must go look today though.

I planted a Venus this spring, and it was kinda smallish to begin with. Once it settled down it grew quite nicely and I noticed the start of 3 scapes about 3-4 weeks ago. None in bloom yet, but on one I can already see the white of the petals showing through and I can hardly wait to smell how much more fragrant it is than my Guacamole. The weather during the day here has been quite toasty for us for this time of year, nice and sunny, temps in the mid-20's C (that'd be your high 70's F), all in favour of actually having them bloom rather than die on the scape going into senescense.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi--Here are photos of my Aprodite and Venus, taken in 2003 after having added the plants to the garden in 2000.

 I saw one in a magazine and it showed that great flower and I was not sure it was real :-? You know how those magazines make things look better than they really are, but this time it was on the money. I really like that double bloom look! May have to look at one for next year :D

Venus...

Post by DryGulch »

I bought a small Venus in 2001. It has never bloomed, nor even increased in size or thrown up a scape. Just sits there, sometimes I think it is a tiny plastic hosta, it just never changes.

I guess I got ripped, especially as it was the most money I have ever spent on any garden plant other than a tree.

DG, do you have it planted in full sun? That is the trick, and extra water and fertilizer.
