Pic of the Day--Paradigm

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Paradigm is aptly named. It is a very attractive variety that becomes more attractive with age. The plant in our Friendship Garden has shown a good growth rate typical for the variety. In 2006 it measured 17x8 and it was 27x11 this year. That puts it on track to reach the registration size of 46x20 although some Paradigms will grow beyond that.

Hank, Paradigm is one of my favorite Hostas! :P Being a sport of Abiqua Recluse, it has wonderful substance when it matures. Here's a May pic of mine. I should also add...I really like the lesser known reverse sport of Paradigm which is called Destiny. Thought I had a pic of it, too. Can't find it.

I've been bragging about my Paradigm all season . . . it still looks perfect. I think this is my very favorite hosta -- at least my current favorite!

Destiny, I'll have to remember that.
I need it to complete the sport family.
Paradigm is a great plant, I divided mine so it's small but I have a few.

last year my peridigm sent out an all green sport which I devided off. This year the paradigm is staying true to itself & the all green sport is spectacular for an all green hosta. Very pebbled & it is just now sending up a bloom shoot. That's a brave hosta in MN.

hostasilly - the all green form of 'paradigm' is called 'green glitter' and it is a massive eye-catching hosta! it will definitely outperform 'ma'.

I have one of those all green ones too. Still pretty small. I'll have to put a label on it.

All the posts I've seen of Paradigm have been very nice. In all the photos I've seen it just pops out at you. Glitter looks shiney too.

Ken, I didn't even know the all green sport (reversion??) was named......here all this time when mine sports a green eye, I have just been gathering the leaves together and ripping the whold div. off at the crown, and pitching it.

Dave, I couldn't find a pic of Destiny anywhere, so I went out 2 days ago and took one. keep in mind what time of year it is, and it still looks pretty darned good yet! :P

Debbie, I got it in maybe 2003 as an os plant from Jimmy Mac, who knew Calvin. I met Calvin in 2005 at the Midwest Regional convention, where his Hosta...'Ozark Welcome' was the convention plant. I asked him about Destiny, and he said it was registered, but plans to tc it fell through, because He got busy and forgot to send a division in to the lab. For all I know, it's been done now. I have donated a division 2 times to the AHS auction, and Calvin has spread it around as well, in os form. My pic at the HL is of the plant Jimmy Mac has, but the picture is old.....even my younger plant that has been divided twice has more mature looking leaves....rounder and more corrugated. I bet Jimmy's is a real looker now! :D
