Pic of the Day--Alvatine Taylor

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--The photos I have of today's plant, Alvatine Taylor, do not show the beautiful blue coloring that I expect this variety to develop. Alvatine Taylor is an excellent variety that many gardeners have grown to replace the variety Frances Williams, since Frances Williams has a serious problem with developing burned out edges. Alvatine Taylor has a very good growth rate and can be expected to reach a size of over 48 inches and as much as 65 inches. The plant in our Friendship Garden was 15x11 in 2006 and 23x7 this past June.

Mine looked a lot like Jewel of the Nile this year, had not noticed that before. Last year the leaves were bigger than I expected, this year smaller again, but then it is still in a pot and been moved around a lot.

Here's a 2004 pic of my Alvatine Taylor, sandwiched between Gold Regal and Blue Angel. It was huge...completely outgrew the space I had alloted. So, I carefully dug it up in early spring 2005, sacrificing as few roots as possible. While I had it out of the ground, I took a small piece off for DD, and then replanted it a few feet over so it had room to grow. It did not care for being disturbed. It's been very slow to recover, and still doesn't look like it should. This year it was probably back to about half the size it was when I moved it. I'm hoping to see it back to its' former glory next year.

Linda, they all look healthy. What is that variegated one in the front of the pic?

OOOPss...posted the wrong pic! The variegated one in the front is montana Aureomarginata.
Let me see if I can get the right pic of Alvatine Taylor. It's in the first one, but you can't tell!
Nancy, the groundcover is golden creeping jenny.

Beautiful pics all around, Linda! My MA got whacked...hard...by the freeze. It was new last year, so it hasn't shown me anything cool yet! High hopes for next year...surely we will have a good year next year after how bad this one was!
