Pic of the Day--Lakeside Looking Glass

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--I got Lakeside Looking Glass in 2002 and had it growing in a spot that got a couple of hours of afternoon sun. Since it didn't seem very happy in that environment, for the last three years it has been growing in full shade and has performed better there. The plant has unique, eye catching, shiny leather-like foliage that can easily pass a 10 foot rule. Starting in 2003 its measurements have been 17x7, 21x6, 23x9, 28x11, and 34x10. That puts it a bit larger than the registration size of 24x10.

I'm a sucker for the shiny ones and this one is VERY shiny! When it looks good, it's looks really, really good, but when it looks bad it looks really, really bad. Do you have lots of problems with yours looking ratty later in the season?
Here's mine from a couple years ago.

I've had mine just one season and had it in a pot where it didn't do well at all. Do yours die down early? Mine is now in the garden, but disappeared almost as soon as I planted it. I'm hoping for the best for next year, but ....

Then maybe mine is not happy with the spot it is planted and I'll have to consider moving it to a more shady spot.
I know those slug holes aren't too attractive, LG, but this plant truly is an eyecatcher.

Hank, I don't believe it drained properly in the pot. I'm just hoping that it didn't get crown rot. Time will tell.

Hank,
That first pic has to be the best looking LLG I have seeen. I didn't think mine liked the heat around here but it did seem to perk up this year with more sun in the spring and lots of water. Later in the season it looked rough and went dormant early as it usually does. I will attribute that to the terrible drought this year. I just couldn't seem to get enough water on anything.

Just a follow up on my comments above - mine died down rapidly in its second year and tested positive for HVX. I've not replaced it.

I planted my LLG last summer. The slugs and earwigs like it in my garden but it faired better this past summer than it did in 2011, probably because I was more vigilant about pest control. I love its shiny habit and it reminds me of Candy Dish, which I bought in 2011 too.

Lakeside Looking Glass in the 2013 season

It is a yingeri hybrid that I have had since 2010. It was one of the hosta that got me into troughs instead of fighting tree roots that almost wiped out the garden this one was in.

This is my reversion to solid green from Lakeside Reflecting Glass. Can I call it LLG? I know a purist wouldn't but ...

2017 update. Or is it LLG? This sported/reverted from my 'Lakeside Reflecting Glass'. It continues to grow and in 2018 is looking even better, but I'm not so sure the colour is as dark green as it should be. July 19.
