Vote for the most popular Hosta of Hallson Forum 2008

Post by sugar »

Just like last year.. let's look for the most popular hosta of the forum, during the winter, so we are not influenced by plants doing very well 'at the moment of the vote'

Last year, you could vote on 10 plants; because many people where moaning that 10 was too little, you can vote this year for twenty plants. Off course, you don't need to 'nominate' 20 plants...

The order of the plants does not have any impact. You don't need to grow the species you name, but we like some comment why those plants are your favorites.
Please don't add a number or anything else in front of your list, it will make it much harder to do the vote counting...

Will make a great purchase list for some of us (not for me this year, out of place and allready ordered way too many for 2008)

I'll try to update the ranking every day...

Last year, we had 45 people joining the poll, I would like to have more then 50 votes this year

OK this is my list

Hanky Panky - Bought one last year, very distinctive plant
Secret Love - My favourite fragrant, blue with yellow variegation and nice white flowers
Li’l Abner - Copper variegation
Moonlight - distinctive colour
Blue Mouse Ears - cute
Red Dragon - Red flower stalks
Devon Green - superb plant, great substance
Rosedale Misty Pathways - very nice variegation
Royal Tapestry - nice shape, great substance
Violetta - Vase shaped and gorgeous flowers
Fireworks - very good substance, great coulour contrast
Dixie Chick - My favourite mini
kikutii var. caput-avis - Very nice leave shape.
Essence Of Summer - I have a young plant over here, but saw a full-grown plant from Danny. Superb flowers, great substance, dark green leaves...
Love Pat - I love this one
Blaue Venus - My favourite blue, very 'blue' and nice leave shape
Kiwi Full Monthy - Better then striptease
Rainbow’s End - My plant is very small, but the fullgrown plant I saw somewhere else was really stunning.
June - because my list should not heve been complete without it
Sagae - Well, I could have picked Liberty or Magic Fire as well, but I think I prefer the original. I was never impressed by pictures , but when I ordered the plant after seeing a full-grown plant in another garden...

Wish I'd kept my list from the AHS popularity poll. That would have made it a little easier.
Here goes nothing...

June - love the colour and it's diversity
Quiet Waters - love everything about this one
Paul's Glory - every time I walk by this plant in a
nursery, I still want to buy it
Parhelion - I love the big ones and this one in
particular
Sagae - it's such a stunner, how could you not love
it?
Blue Angel - another big beauty!
Guacamole - vigorous, fragrant, and good looks too
Paradigm - looks great all season every year
tokudama Aureonebulosa - I know it's slow, but it's
so worth it
Dream Weaver - it just screams 'look at me'
Komodo Dragon - King of the dragons!
Earth Angel - an improved Blue Angel for sure
First Frost - looks great literally up til the first frost
Striptease - I still like the look
Pandora's Box - it's just so cute and grows well
Garden Treasure - another big one with lots of
bumples
Wild Bill - I love the markings and they stay until July
here
Cameo - small but catches your eye anyway

Jewel of the Nile - No two leaves are the same but the
whole clump together is striking
Great Expectations - another slow one but worth it

That's 20. Ask me tomorrow and that 20 could change, but not much. I only put down the ones that I grow and have experience with. I guess as the collection grows, the favourites grow with it.

You know, I will still wine because its hart to pick the top 20 too - though a little easier than a list of 10. Here's my favorites from last summer:

<u><b>Bressingham Blue</u></b> Luv the big leaves and blue bumps
<u><b>Crepe Soul</u></b> The grey/green center really has the dusty, soft look like crepe
<u><b>Deep Blue Sea</u></b> Such a nice deep blue with round bumpy leaves
<u><b>Delta Dawn </u></b> This one gets better as the summer progresses - a nice butter color
<u><b>Dragon Tails </u></b> A great mini with a deeply ruffled edge
<u><b>Francis Williams</U></b> My first and everyone that sees it wants one too!
<u><b>Great Expectations</u></b> No hosta can compare with leaf color - definitely my favorite
<u><b>Guardian Angel</u></b> I like the grey/blues and grey/greens - great color
<u><b>Halcyon</u></b> Holds the blue ALL season
<u><b>Hippodrome</u></b> Love the unusual shape to the leaf with a ripple to the edge
<u><b>June</u></b> I never tire of the colors even as they change throughout the season
<u><b>Kryptonite</u></b> No shinier dark green leaf in my garden
<u><b>Lakeside Cha Cha</u></b> The chartreuse green glows in the shade
<u><b>Pandora's Box</u></b> Such a consistent performing mini
<u><b>Paradigm</u></b> Just hit four years - a WOW
<u><b>Strip Tease</u></b> My other top favorite - always stops visitors
<u><b>Summer Breeze</u></b> Beautiful yellow and green
<u><b>Thunderbolt</u></b> The bolt glows from big round leaves that are almost wider than they are long
<u><b>Tokudama Aureonebulosa</u></b> great color all season
<u><b>Wolverine</u></b> Amazed at how much sun it can takes and never burns!

Don't know if I'll get to 20, I'll start out with 10:
  1. Blue Mouse Ears - what can I say, the substance, the texture, the flowers, what's NOT to like
  2. Fortunei Hyacinthina - a classic, just love the way it looks almost black at times during the summer, AND, you gotta love its penchant for sporting
  3. Guacamole - vigorous, fragrant flowers, nice variegation, what more do you want
  4. Maui Buttercups - great yellow with substance
  5. Striptease - a great grower for me, too bad the dogs developed a taste for its leaves last summer, will have to find a new spot for it
  6. Bright Lights - great substance, love that glaucous yellow
  7. Minute Man - been a good grower for me, much better than Patriot
  8. Feather Boa - my first mini, love the deep purple flowers
  9. Dream Queen - slow grower, but with great substance and colour it's worth waiting for it to mature
  10. June - no need to explain, is there

My top favourites at this time. As someone said above - it could change tomorrow.

Allegan Fog I love the misty leaves.
Blue Shadows and Tok. AureoNebulosa - so far I couldn't tell them apart if they weren't labelled; so I have to mention both. Love the colour of the leaves.
Blue Wedgewood - for a blue, this is my favourite so far. Holds its colour well and looks positively perky.
Cherry Berry - love the red in the petioles and it has grown well for me. Holds its flowers up high.
Clausa - this one is the most enthusiastic grower, spreading by rhyzomes. A great filler for a problem spot. And while the flower buds never open, their purple colour is more intense than any other Hosta in my garden.
Diana Remembered - enthusiastic grower. Humongous fragrant, white blooms.
First Frost - while still relatively new to me, I love the intense blue of the leaves with the gold-white margin.
fortunei Aureomarginata - this is a real old fashioned one, but a mature planting a really glorious with the golden margins.
Great Expectations - love mine too for all the reasons mentioned above. It's quite a slow grower and part of it reverted to green a few years back, requiring surgery, but I really do like its colour.
Gypsy Rose - I no longer have and will not replace, as it was diagnosed with HVX and I gather it's very difficult to get new plants that are clean, but it sure was a looker. Broke my heart to have to destroy it.
Invincible is a fast growing, very shiny green leaved hosta. Love it.
June - for all the reasons mentioned above.
Korean Snow - another with lovely misty leaves.
Little Red Rooster - presently my favourite mini with its upright habit and red petioles.
Paul's glory - love the colour. Love the blooms. It sits upright as the show piece of one garden and enjoys every minute of it.
Regal Splendor - definitely lives up to its Regal name. Will be moved to the centre of my new garden this year where it will have space to show off.[/u]
Remember Me - love the bright gold when it emerges before the leaves become white centred. It has enough substance that I've never had problems with it melting out.
September Sun - I like almost as much as Paul's Glory which, in my garden at least, has similar colouring.
summer Breeze - Unusual colour with the bright gold wide margins.

That's 19 and I'm nearly at the end of the list. I edited because I accidentally hit "submit" before I was finished.

As I limited myself to solid colored plants only for my collection over the past years, some of the nicer variegated ones will loose points.
Still there are a few of them in the list.

War Paint: this one really stands out: tall, distinctive, very good growth rate. Once spring is gone it tones down to match the rest of the garden.

Eos : nice shape (clump and leaves), good rippling, red in the petioles, very good and fertile pod parent for me.

Grand Slam : very good for breeding, very fertile, nice leaf shape and red petioles.

Sky Dancer : absolutely stunning clump shape and leaf shape and color, a special tint of blue that takes some sun and has great breeding potential

Clovelly : I don't have it yet, but judging from the pictures it has a superb priecust leaf.

Blue Mountains : H. 'Halcyon' looks, but the size of a small sieboldiana. Great stuff.

Brandywine : Satin green leaves on very purple petioles that really show. Couldn't do without it.

Best of Twenty : very nice longipes offspring, hope it has some good breeding potential. And hard to find (although that has never been a reason for me to buy a plant).

Deane's Dream: red petioles, narrow satin green leaf, very good grower. Should be great as a pollen parent.

Royal Standard: great flower show, very healthy looking, fast growing.

nigrescens : Special in color, shape, scape hight, a classic but a must have. 'Tenryu' is the same plant.

pycnophylla : Just simple breathtaking with its white backs. One of the back bones of my hybrizing plans

hypoleuca : The other base for my hybridizing (pollen donor). Large, very glaucous, desirable traints in a hosta.

kikutii : real cute narrow drooping leaves, parent for many pretty cultivars, with some great breeding potential yet to be discovered.

Don Stevens: another variegated one: grows very well, nice even clump with long petioles (reddish) and very nice when flowering.

Theo's Blue : A classic hosta to be. It has it all.

Tom Schmid: variegated, upright, stunning. If you don't have it: GET IT !!

Sea Gulf Stream : a yellow turning chartreuse with perfect leaf shape (wavy, piecrusted).

One Man's Treasure: one of the best when flowering and a great plant

Fall Bouquet: the very best when in flower, to put next to the previous one.

Greetings,

Rob

This IS tough. I actually have only about 35 hosta but still...
So, OK.
Elegans. My first and a great plant overall.
Blue Mouse Ears. Of course!
Ginko Craig.
Gold Standard.
Northern Exposure. Also an early purchase, because it was an Elegans sport. Not disappointed at all.
Wide Brim. Has anyone ever seen it planted near Annabelle hydrangea and Autumn Joy sedum, when the sedum has the 'broccoli' flower buds? Talk about a composition in color and texture.
Wolverine
June
Cherish
Cameo
Blue Cadet
Rainforest Sunrise
Krossa Regal
Halcyon
Brother Ronald. What a color!
Fire Island
My newer, large hosta are still babies. So maybe next year they will make the list!

The top of my list is
Pandoras Box - because it is such a good grower, it makes me smile, and it is very pretty.
Fried Green Tomatoes - Very vigorous and fragrant
Goober - It's just so odd I had to have it :P
Strip Tease - I like the distinct markings
Hirao Magesty - It stands to attention, and stands up in the garden.
Java - Another plant that is distinct and thick
June - in the shade is where I like it best
Komodo Dragon - Cause it's big and I think my dog is scared of it!
Leather Sheen - amazing shiny green leaves that are leather thick!
Let me Entertain you - Fast growing and small to medium sized.
Midas Touch - A brillant golden color, I like the heavily textured leaves
Paul's Glory - Because of the greens.
Permanent Wave - I like ruffles
Phantom - I would replace if I lost, I like the scapes and the wavey thick leaves.
Plantaginea - A must have for the huge white flowers and fragrance, another one I would replace
Salute - grows well, and has a unique shape
Sherborne Swan Just full of grace
T-Rex - I like the color and it's big! Another one that my dog doesn't go near
Tall Boy - I bought this plant with my Husband in mind. The scapes last year were not as tall as him, I'm hoping for better this year! My Husband is 6' 3" The scapes should reach 7' Not a very big plant only the scapes!
Sagea - one of those must haves in any garden

I just hit my 20, I could very easily add to this list! May be I'll find the time to figure out how to post my list of Hostas!

I would like to ask which hosta have you had a long time, weren't very impressed by then all of a sudden one year it just blew you away?

For me, that was Abiqua Drinking Gourd. It got huge really cupped leaves about 2 years ago & is breathtaking!

Montana Aureomarginata was super pretty last year after about 4 or 5 years. It just glowed all season!

Pauls Glory was so glorious I had to double check my maps. I just didn't remember it being so pretty before but last year it was great!

Also, Lady Isobel Barnett really impressed me after I first got her but no one has mentioned her so thought I would.
