It had to happen someday, I got ORGANIZED!!!

Post by flowerchild59 »

It was a cold and rainy monday a couple of days ago and I was motivated by well, boredom, and general laziness to clean the house. So I sat down and started typing my hostas out into Theme beds.
They have been organized into theme beds for several years but my masterlist on paper was several years old and looking mighty shabby and was just in general alphbetical order with my chicken scratches off to the sides when I added a plant.
I now have the beds all typed out individually and verified by finding the plants and id'ing them with their metal paw paw marker (love those things). So the beds done so far are:
People's name........with elvis lives, sara, robert frost, etc
Royalty......with majesty, queen josephine, regal splendor, etc
Naughty.......with Mr. Big, fan dance, stripetease, etc
Species and oriental theme names.......with gracimilla, pycnophylla, ogon amagi, hakayu, etc
Sun, Moon and Stars......with sundance, moon lily, blue moon, thunderbolt, galaxy, etc
Locations Bed....with manhattan, mississippi delta, sweet home Chicago, etc.
Food......with guacamole, ice cream, purple lady fingers, etc
Lakeside bed........with surf rider, meter maid, looking glass,
etc
Religious......with holy mole, stained glass, hope, st. Paul, etc
Heucheras also got typed out offically too.

Then of course, there is the miscellaneous bed for the ones that resist themes of any sort and that is by my front door and also includes a few older ones I can't ID and I am just too darn old to dig them up and give them away, just based on principal that I can't id them.

It was also kind of interesting to find out how many I didn't really have or couldn't find, but I had to have them at one time or another since they were on my master list.
I still officially have over 350 plants. Verified. For now

I have to say many of my themes, especially in the food category, are far stretches, like:
reptillian.......you can eat one if you have to.
alligator shoes.......well, deep fried alligator is considered a delicacy down south. Shoe or not.
sea octopus.........yes, it is eaten somewhere. Ugh.
snow flakes..........yes, I have eaten a few. White. Not yellow.
wolverine.......well, yes you could if you had to.
and so on.

Congrats on getting yourself all organized, Cheryl!
I really need to redo all my lists and such this year too. I updated a bit last year, but sort of in a haphazard way.
It sure gives you a sense of satisfaction, doesn't it? And so much more fun than housework.

Pia,
I mark my hostas with metal markers from Paw Paw and place on them strips that I print out from my brother PT label maker, and I use the heavy duty strips so they last for years outdoors.
I splurged a few years ago and now all of my hostas and heucheras are marked with a label.
You can see all sorts of markers at the hosta library web sit under the tab...labels:

I recently found a photo album I started a couple years ago, with nice big photos, neatly labeled, of some of my beds (after reading on here that that is a good way to track)

I went through the album muttering, "moved that, divided that... moved those, moved those..."

Gah! Why can't I just leave them alone?

Sounds like you had a busy Monday for not wanting to do anything, Cheryl.

After looking at your 'I could eat it if I had to' list - I think you need a new theme bed: Animals.

Pia, about Cheryl's Food theme bed . . . . lady fingers are a type of cookie here. Still, I marvel at how much more you know about us than we know about the Danish.

Oh Bob, we have OKRA here in the states. I cut it cross wise so they look like wagon wheels, put corn meal on them & fry them. Hmmmmm, very good.

I am stranded in a sea of apple trees, surrounded by the amish neighbors on one side, cows on the other. My daughter has horses and cows, and now that the my kids are gone, I guess we are going to be a working farm again as we need the tax write offs now.
Pia, you are always so interesting to read when you post. Wow, so many languages and adventures.

Mary Ann - 'miles & miles of nothing' is how I describe Nebraska & Kansas. Wheat is infinitely more boring than corn.

Guess I'd better check my Powerball ticket from last nite, Pia. When you fly over Iowa in summer you'll see that it's all just one large cornfield. LOL And definitely bigger than Denmark.

So you can understand Norwegian & Swedish when the mood strikes - huh?? I see how you Danes are!!
