A Hosta Garden in May

Post by renaldo75 »

Here are some pics I took yesterday of one garden on the east side of my yard.

I think the 2nd link will work OK, but since I haven't done one of these before I'm providing both just in case...

Thanks for the nice comments everybody!! :D

The yellow hosta is Choo Choo Train. 1st year in the last 3 that it hasn't had a setback. It's been there since 2003 so it should be huge by now, but it just hasn't worked out that way. :???:

The Piedmont Gold sport is a plant that I bought in 2003 from a lady in a town SE of where I live. I've never owned Piedmont Gold, but she said hers had had this sport for several years and she was kind enough to dig a division for me. It's looked nice in previous years, but never this nice. I've never thought about naming it since it really isn't my sport. And there are so many Piedmont Gold sports on the market already anyway...

I'll try to get another batch of pics uploaded to Photobucket later. I took pics in a couple of other beds too. Just didn't have time to do more this morning.

And I agree, Ed. I love this time of year when the hostas are unfurling nicely & look so fresh. :D

Reldon, now you just have to grow it next to Tyler's Treasure, Satisfaction, and Piedmont Special to see if there are any differences.
I love these, so I bet yours is fantastic as well.

Dave - I sure would if I had the room, but... I don't have any of those other 3 PG sports. I know Tyler's Treasure & Satisfaction can get pretty huge. This sport has never shown any signs of getting that big. This is definitely the largest it's ever been. Do any of those sports have the slightly rippled margins like mine is showing??

Based on my memory, they do. Look exactly like yours. I have had Piedmont Special the longest.

Thanks, Dave - I thought they probly did. I just couldn't recall for sure. I saw a Satisfaction several years ago that would rival some of the HUGE hostas in size. But I don't think this one will ever come close to that.

They all look so clean too. Did you wash them down first? We have spent blossoms, airplanes, and cottony stuff drifting down from the trees everyday. My hostas will all need a bath before another photo session.

Drats! For some reason, I'm unable to see the slide show. Sounds like I'm missing pics of lovely hostas and a beautiful garden.

Reldon, what great pictures. Loved the slide show, very nice hostas you have growing in your gardens. Wish my Piiedmont Gold would put out a sport as nice as yours. I haven't had mine for only a couple of years and it sure glows this time of year. My Choo Choo Train sound like yours. I was wondering what happened to mine also as I planted mine in 2003 and it seemed like the ice and freeze of 2007 really set it back. I will keep hopping that it regains some of its size in the next couple of years. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Sue & Mary Ann. :) I did have to clean up some 'belly button lint' on some of these hostas. Can't remember whose DH it was who coined that term, but I always think of it at this time of year. Fortunately there didn't seem to be as much on the hostas in this garden as there was in the garden just to the south. But then it has overhanging branches from both my crab apple & the neighbor's maple so there's no escape in that one.

Bengal - sorry you're not able to see the slideshow. Did you try clicking on both the link and the pic?? They both worked for me when I tried them before I posted. And I just tried both again & they worked just fine... Other than that I don't know what to tell you. :???:

Ren, your Piedmont Gold sport also looks like my Piedmont Special! It's a big ole plant, maintains it's good looks all summer. Not an easy one to find but I did locate some last year to put in a new bed. Like the slideshow!

Great slideshow!

I particularly like the LS Roy EL. For some reason I had put it on my mental list of "eh" hostas, but yours is so beautiful it has now moved to the "must find" list.

Thanks for posting them - they all "look mahvelous".
