any thoughts....

... on what may be going on here.

These are a recent division and one of last year's seedlings that share a sheltered area I use for keeping an eye on those sorts of things. It's covered, but open at both ends and I seem to have an issue this spring with aphids, white flies and thrips. I don't think any of those are responsible for what I'm seeing here, but rather think it to be of a soil born nature, but what and more importantly, do I worry about it or just remove the affected leaves and be done with it?

Any thoughts on what it is we're looking at?

Just a few minutes ago I did a quick Google on thrips and it turns out they can be quite nasty in terms of the damage they can cause. And it could well be them that are responsible for what I'm seeing here.... Now, how to eradicate them..... bring out the big guns....

I think thrips too when I see those tiny dots of damage. My collection of hosta is small enough that I can use a spray bottle of an insecticide that has pyrethrins as it's active ingredient. That works for me.
