This is a sport of Praying Hands with a pure white margin.

Praying Hands has a chartreuse margin in spring, turning golden yellow, then turning cream. It isn't really grown for the variegation, but instead the unique shape. So when I found this white margined sport I set it aside years ago and have watched it grow.

Visitors see it, want it, then argue with me when I try to sell them Praying Hands. "No, I want that one!" I explain that this is the only one I have, and its the only white edged Praying Hands I've heard of. But what do I call it? I've been going through this for a couple years now.

One name that I sort of like is Hosta 'Grecian Fountain' since that's what the shape reminds me of, especially when it is in bloom. At least it reminds me more of a fountain than of praying hands, and when it blooms it has the form of a Grecian fountain. But then it looses touch with its origin, and that seems to be part of the selling point for this one.

After JGH's NPOTD for Praying Hands I thought about Hosta 'Durer's Hands', but that doesn't roll off the tongue and would be tough for most to spell. And Jim would probably be the only one to buy it for the name ;)

So give me some ideas here. I really do want to give this a name and really want to start propagating it since it really is a showy sport of Praying Hands. You can see that it is variegated from a long distance, while Praying Hands looks green from a distance.

TIA.

Chris

Just a few thoughts I had....

Holy Hands
Raise Your Hands
Holding Hands
Handfast
Hold My Hand
Hold Your Hand
Hands Across the Water (okay so I'm on a Beatles kick right now  )
Hand Over Heart
Helping Hands

I'll keep thinking....

Two songs come to mind...

Wings of a Dove got some radio play... not sure who did the original... I'm sure it was covered on the Legends album by Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton ... actually, I think it was Ferlin Husky...

On the wings of a snow-white dove
He sends His pure sweet love
A sign from above (sign from above)
On the wings of a dove (wings of a dove)

and there is the great Platters hit My Prayer

My prayer is to linger with you
At the end of the day in a dream that's divine
My prayer is a rapture in blue
With the world far away and your lips close to mine

So how about Wings of a Dove or My Prayer ???

I was trying to think of angel (feathers) and something with prayer, but it gets, well, a little sappy for me.

Wings of a Prayer could be good. A Google search found this poem (isn't Helen Steiner Rice sort of a Hallmark poet?)
ON THE WINGS OF A PRAYER

Just close your Eyes and open your heart,
And feel your worries and cares depart.
Just yield yourself to the Father above,
And let him hold you secure in his love.

For life on earth grows more involved,
With endless problems that can't be solved,
But God only ask us to do our best,
Then he will take over and finish the rest...

So when you are tired, discouraged and blue,
There is always one door that is open to you,
And that is the door to The House of Prayer,
And you'll find God waiting to meet you there.
And The House of Prayer is no further away,
than the quiet spot where you kneel and pray.

For the heart is a temple when God is there
As we place ourselves in his loving care.
And he hears every prayer and answers each one
When we Pray in His name - Thy will be done.
The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear
Are lifted away on the wings of a prayer.

by: Helen Steiner Rice
So, take it or leave it, but the hosta may always have this association. The name could help sell the hosta; it would be a nice "memorial" hosta for a spirituality-themed bed.

Another direction came to mind: Praying for Snow? an odd sentiment for a hosta gardener!

Wings of a Dove was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. I had a .45 record and played it often.

I like "Wing and a Prayer" (old saying), and Folded in Prayer in addition to Wings of a Dove

How about Hosta 'Supplication'? Too dreary? I'd go for the Hosta 'Grecian Fountain' idea. No need to propagate a name that you don't think is appropriate. After all, it's your hosta, Chris. Go for it!

There were several I liked. Lucy's wasn't one of them...

I liked jobranch's - but I'd reverse the words to 'Answered Prayer'.

And I liked 'Wings of a Prayer' too.
