Clovelly

Post by Quiet Storm »

Does anyone have Hosta Clovelly? My latest obsession is ruffle edged hostas, and I absolutely adore Clovelly, but am having a hard time finding it. Has anyone had success finding it? Chris, will Hallson be offering Clovelly in the future?

Thanks
Gloria

Gloria - I'm the same as you this year. Every piecrusted, rippled margin captures my immediate attention. :D

I've seen Clovelly for sale several places recently. I'm still waiting to find the nicest young plant I can find. Good vigor will be the selling point since none of the ones I've seen show even the slightest rippled margin. :???: Guess that wonderful scalloped piecrust margin takes some time to develop. I'd say it's a pretty good guess that Hallson's will have it in the future.

I had hoped to have it, but all but one plant shipped to me this year were rotten. In order to get credit I had to ship them all back, so we don't have any and don't have any plans to add them again. But I'm sure others have had better luck with this one than us :???:

Thanks Chris. There are only a couple of places from which I've been willing to buy hostas of late -- Hallson, of course, a nursery in Carlisle, MA that is very aware of HVX and diligent about selling plants that are disease free, and a grower in Sudbury, MA who sells plants from his extensive home garden.

I always check Hallson's first. When they didn't have it I found one at Naylor Creek. The young plant has good substance, but the leaves are only wavy for now. I'm looking forward to the pie-crusting.

Thanks Diana. I will check them out. I have Donahue Piecrust, which is young, and only wavy for the time being, but, like you, I am waiting for the piecrusting. My Komodo Dragon is wonderfully rippled, and quite large given that I just got it late last summer.

Thanks a million Diana. Naylor Creek still had it in stock, and I ordered one. Looking forward with great anticipation to receiving it.

Don't expect it to be very big when you get it or you might be disappointed. Mine was a pretty small little guy but with healthy roots and a wavy edge. I'm looking forward to watching it grow!

I guess I'll be looking with intent to buy from now on since I know Hallson's doesn't have it.

Here's a photo taken just now. The plant is in a one gallon nursery can. If you zoom in closely you will see that it is about to send up a flower scape.

Saw Clovelly in a local nursery this week. Problem is, it is one that had HVX in the past. Not sure I want to risk it, tho their plants look much healthier this year.

I have Clovelly - however you would not recognize it. The thing is so small it looks like one of the seedlings I started late March. Maybe next year it will have more leaves and show some signs of the ruffles.....

Most of the TC's of Clovelly I've seen look like Diana's pic. You do need to give this plant a few years to develope it's mature super piecrust edge.

Kent- Please resolve the pronunciation of h.Clovelly. Would it be "CLO velly", or "clo VELLY?" Thanks!

Diana,

It's funny you should mention that. When I called Naylor Creek this morning to clarify the details of my order, the gentleman I spoke with very gently corrected my pronunciation of Clovelly. I pronounced it CLOvelly, and he said, "It's actually pronounced CloVELLY." So, Kent, which is it?

Kent-

So where did you come up with a name like that? Some secret meaning? Inquiring minds need to know!
