Heading east--where to visit?

We will be leaving Indiana tomorrow heading for a family weekend in New Jersey. We will probable take I-70 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike out into New York and on into New Jersey. Do any of you have suggestions as to gardens or hosta nurseries that we should visit out that way? DH has even put a wooden tray in the back in case I find something to bring back.
All suggestions will be appreciated!

Hi Jane,

I wish I could help point you in the right direction to find some fun places to stop, but I don't really get out much myself...

Wade and Gatton would be worth a small detour if you have the extra time, and might not really be too far out of the way if you jog to the north from Columbus:

What part of NJ are you headed to? If you are going to be a little further south (near Trenton) I would suggest Teich & McColgan

Seeley's Nursery in Hilliard, OH, northwest of Columbus is very close to rte 70. We stopped by there on the way to St Louis. They have big plants, and huge variety. Watch for nematodes in the plants you buy, there has been a problem in the past but that is not enough to stop me. Many of the old nurseries with big plants have the same problem. I got 4 big plants from them this year.

Well, since you will be driving right through Columbus, Ohio...

There is Inniswood Gardens Metro Gardens in Westerville (NE suburb) of Columbus. That's where the hosta 'Inniswood' originated. Not a large hosta collection but lots of H. 'Inniswood':

These were the two places that came to mind for me when you mentioned coming across 70. I would echo the nematode comment on Seely's.

A trip up North to Wade and Gatton would also be well worth it. I think it's just over an hour for us to get there from the north side of Columbus. Looking at a map there are several different ways you could go.

Garden to visit - Chanticleer, in Wayne, PA. One of my very favorite gardens to visit. But it's quite expensive to get in....$5.00 per person.

I second Alexa on Teich and McColgan. For one thing, you can go home with large field-grown hostas and daylilies. They are outside of Perkasie, PA.

Perhaps those places are a bit too far south?

Well, the christening is over and we are on our way home. We are staying north of Philly tonight and plan to visit Teich and McCongan tomorrow. The GPS should take us right to their place. I'll let you all know what I find.

DH and I took a quick trip to Lowes this morning whiled waiting for the kids to get ready. I found a hosta labeled golden sunset. I didn't have it on my list, so it is going home to Indiana with me. Have any of you heard of this one? I didn't find it in the Hosta Library.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions about where to stop. We will try to make a couple more as we go through Columbus.
