Vote for the most popular hosta of this forum - 2009

Post by sugar »

Just like last year and the year before ... let's vote for the most popular hosta of the forum, during the winter, so we are not influenced by plants doing very well 'at the moment of the vote' . We got a pretty nice list last year, let's see if there are lots of changes this year...

Just like last year, you can 'nominate' 20 plants... The order of the plants does not have any impact. You don't need to grow the species you name, but we like some comment why those plants are your favorites.
Please don't add a number or anything else in front of your list, it will make it much harder to do the vote counting...

Will make a great purchase list for some of us :bd: I'll try to update the ranking every day...

Last year, we had 60 people joining the poll, I hope to get to 60 votes again this year

Just like last year, I'm the first to vote :frosty:

Blue Mouse Ears : a mini with substance & nice looks
Breeders Love : a very nice Yellow/Blue streaked Love Pat
Change of Tradition : long dark green leaves with a small edge
Devon Green : great substance...
Essence of Summer : *ploid version of Warwick Essence, great substance, superb flowers (fragrant)
Hanky Panky : superb variegation
June : the most popular last year in our vote
Kikuttii : Shape & veins
Kiwi Full Monthy : I prefer this one over striptease.
Lakeside Baby Face : A 'mini' Sagae...
Moonlight : I like the specific gold/green color
Neptune : new addition to my collection last year.
Olympic Sunrise : another halcyon descendent that's just as good as June
Praying Hands : there's more to this plant than the weird shape. It has superb substance
Rainbow's End : Nice color, red flower stalks and substance
Red Dragon : nice green with red flower stalks
Royal Tapestry : shape of the leaves, the variegation colors
Setsurei : very nice pycnophylla hybrid.
Violetta : vase-shaped plant with very dark purple flowers
Wonderland : two-toned variegation

I had to take a look of course at what I posted for last year's. I only did 10 then and I have stuck to varieties I grow myself.

Blue Mouse Ears - what can I say, the substance, the texture, the flowers, what's NOT to like
Fortunei Hyacinthina - a classic, just love the way it looks almost black at times during the summer, AND, you gotta love its penchant for sporting
Guacamole - vigorous, fragrant flowers, nice variegation, what more do you want
Maui Buttercups - great yellow with substance
Striptease - a great grower for me
Bright Lights - great substance, love that glaucous yellow
Minute Man - been a good grower for me, much better than Patriot
Feather Boa - my first mini, love the deep purple flowers
Dream Queen - slow grower, but with great substance and colour it's worth waiting for it to mature
June - no need to explain, is there

The above were my selections last time around and none have dropped off that list. But, like any other self-respecting Hostaholic, the numbers were increased over the summer and that has lead to the following additions:

Hanky Panky - I've been bitten by the Striptease bug, what can I say
Sagae - statuesque and regal, you have to be impressed when you first see it
Dawn's Early Light - it's pie-crusted AND yellow, just think it's great

Hi here's a vote from the newbee. First half I grow and the second half is my shopping list

Orange Marmalade - it's the color
Dream Weaver- standout
Queen Josephine- it's the shine, uniform variegation, she is regal
Fragrant Bouquet, color, shape of leaves, is it fragrant?
Zounds - a great gold
Blue Shadows
Regal Splendor - upright and variegated
Liberty - knockout
Fan Dance - lovely and demure
Sagae - amazing structure
Victory - dramatic
Delta Dawn - bright
Unforgettalble - unique and a bit out of control
Blue Lightening - ditto
Sunkissed - love the cupped shape, and corrugated texture, also bright
Lonsome Dove - mature form is breathtaking, will I live long enough to see it
Lakeside April Snow - fresh like spring
Maui Buttercup - again I'm a sucker for cupped and corrugated
Nancy - gotta own the hosta named for me
Revolution - love the speckles

Some of my shopping list is based on that great hosta slide show. I tried to post a compliment but it wouldn't accept it.

I hope you don't mind if I wait until spring so I can remember what I have? There are some that always stand out in my mind, but I often forget some this time of year

Robin Hood: substance, color holds well in full sun, subtle varigation

Peter Rue: Wide margin, tri- colored

Lil Abner: unique growth habit, brassy

Touch of Class: most commented on,substance, hand
painted look; there are differt strains of this plant that don't seem to sport to blue, long season

Royal Flush: good growth, nice form

Spinach Soufle: thick as a tractor tire

Powder Blue: good growth, blue holds even in sun,no slugs

Fragrant Boquet: diamond dusted foilage, growth, fragant

Satisfaction: visited a collection of 1,500 hosta this is the one I took home, give it water and high filtered light

St. Paul: excellent contrast, slug resistance, growth, long season

Olympic Sunrise: substance, slug resistant, long season, center will stay yellow in the north

El Capitan: most underrated host I know; tri-colored, growth, substance, long season, inexpensive

Rhinestone Cowboy: slow but lime colored w/ nice white edge, unrully substance, may produce many new sports

Neptune: nice blue with rippled edge, unique form, substance

Rainbows End: 10'rule,unusual varigation, thick but slugs don't think so

About time I got around to doing this. There are pics of all of them if you follow the link in my signature.

Allegan Fog - love its misty leaves
Ghost Spirit - was new last year, but it's another with misty leaves. Shows a lot of promise
June - a perennial favourite which looks good all season long
Peppermint Ice - a perky plant
Remember Me - I love how the leaves emerge with bright yellow centers and then gradually turn creamy
Rootin Tootin - another perky one that makes one take notice. Was new last season. I'm looking forward to this year.
White Christmas - another which looks good all season long for me
Blue Wedgewood - I think this is my favourite blue
Cherry Berry - the slugs don't bother mine and it does well all season
Deja Blu - a nice blue with green margin - a bit different
Grand Tiara - a fast growing, perky edger
Invincible - perhaps my favourite green with its glossy, dark green leaves
Jewel of the Nile - mine is beginning to develop into a mature plant and it's lovely.
Little Sunspot - smiles at one
Lakeside Elfin Fire is a mini which has white centred leaves with streaks of green in the white centre.
Loyalist
Raspberries and Cream - dark, glossy green leaves with a bit of irregular misting in them
Sitting Pretty - lovely small Hosta
Summer Breeze - its colour is different and it really stands out in the garden
Sun Power - Lovely until the Linden tree above it drops too much stuff on it which gets caught in the upright leaves.
