Odd sport of Minuteman

I had posted some pictures last year of a sport of Minuteman that had stripes. It has returned this season.

It may be unstable but the white edge held on. There is a hosta listed in the library called Cathedral
http://www.hostalibrary.org/c/pages/cathedral.html which seems similar - at least to last season's picture.

I'll post pictures as the other pieces open up.

Very nice pictures!

It seems to me that streaked "fortunei" Hostas are actually quite common. I have seen several streaked Francees, I have a streaked Twilight here, and I have also seen a streaked Antioch. Problem is, these type Hostas aren't really good for breeding purposes due to poor pod formation, and a low seed set.
So, enjoy it for what it is...a very pretty plant!!

More sprouts opening.

This plant had two sprouts last season. One sprout had lighter coloration. As the season progressed the lighter side darkened up to where the stripes were bearly visible in mid September. The darker side held its stripes all season.

This season it has only one light piece but five of the darker segments. And all have the white edge.

I would change the title of your post to "Cool sport of Minuteman" . I would love to see photos of it later in the year.

I thought I would post some pictures from last season. This is the same leaf over the season. This is the darker side of the plant. The stripes hold the whole season. The holes are from a really bad hail strom. This season I'll put a chair over it if hail is perdicted.

I may as well finish off the story line with pictures from last year that show the ligher side of the plant as the color fades through the season. This will probably happen to the lighter side of this one. So I'm getting a lot of pictures while it's here.

So when naming your sports are they going to be Luke for the light side and Vader for the dark side?

Hmmm, nice idea. The Rebel Alliance goes with a Minuteman theme. And the power of the "Dark side of the Force" is evident in the 5 to 1 eyes this plant has.

Do you have any plans to divide it and see if you can propagate more of the striped one?

I'd be afraid of killing the lighter side. Maybe if it develops some more eyes.

I have been playing with the names - "Minute Before Sunrise" for the lighter one and "Minute After Sunset" for the darker side. If I split them and they survive and are stable - that's a lot to ask. Are there conventions for names? Scratch that - there must be. Would these violate naming conventions?

For some strange reason it reminds me of the suit Dick Van Dyke wore in "Mary Poppins". Isn't that weird? Why is that? I just love how the stripes are contained by the white edge. I have never seen anything like it before. Totally cool!
