I'd give it a fungicide and hope for the best.

Hi Bert,

I don't know what type of problem this is, whether a fungus, bacteria, fertilizer damage, or something else, though I've seen it before. If one fungicide didn't work then maybe try a different one. Fungicides don't all treat the same types of fungus, which is why it is great if you know what kind it is to begin with. Daconil is a good fungicide to try first since it covers a lot of different problems. You might also check for damage to the base of the plant from slugs or insects. I've seen bugs damage the base of the crown causing the stems to look this way. I've also seen plants treated with Osmocote fertilizer get damaged and look like this.

If you are keeping it in a container consider repotting this spring with fresh potting soil.

In the long run, if this one hosta continues to have this problem year after year I would consider getting rid of it.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Chris
