H. Regal Splendor

Post by jobranch »

This one is entering it's third season with me - purchased from Hallson. It has to be my best looking hosta.

It is a beauty. It's the one here that everybody comments about. I always wondered if it's because mine was potted and near the back door....

I think mine needs to go into the ground this year, and I have no idea where to put it! (and did I mention, no space? ;^) At the moment it's barely waking up in the veggie garden. lol!

Looking great! It's the first hosta and plant for my garden, and I still love it.

It's been a super grower for me, too. I didn't start with the smallest plant, I suppose, but it still matured very quickly.

Mine grew very well the first two years I had it. When I developed a new bed, I moved it into the new bed and while it's growing and looks nice as a plant, it has not bloomed (whereas it HAD bloomed in the previous location). I figure it's a bit darker, but it's not a LOT darker. This is the beginning of its third season in the new location. Sure hope it blooms this year.

What a lovely plant. Does anyone know if it is fertile?

That is a gorgeous photo of a fantastic plant. Unfortunately, I don't think it is fertile which is a shame since it is so spectacular. One I have near my patio keeps putting out the unusual leaf, I really wish I could get a whole eye that looks like this:

That is a great leaf, Alexa. And jobranch, what a beautiful plant.

I love both 'Krossa Regal' and 'Regal Splendor.' I don't care if they're old timers, they have to be two of my favorite hostas. (I also have a thing for the vase-shaped ones.) Here's 'Regal Splendor,' just planted a couple weeks ago:

And here's 'Krossa Regal' last year (which was also its first year in my garden)...

Alexa - it looks like that leaf is pretty close to the edge of the clump. You could try to do bud isolation like the big boys do.
It might take a few years to get it completely isolated, but it'd be fun to try. :D

Alexa - that is a fabulous leaf, maybe you can do something with it.

Kaylyred - I had a Krossa Regal and it put out the most amazing bloom. It had to be 5' tall. But it is a gonner. I kept having a Southern Blight type problem with it and a Royal Standard that were planted side by side. Maybe I'll get another one some day.

I found this Regal splendor sitting all alone in the broiling sun at a hardware store 2 years ago. It looked so sad, I brought it home and now I love it.

Regal Splendor is on my list of sterile hostas as one that is completely, or nearly, pod sterile. Here's the link for Sterile Hostas: http://www.pwk.resteddoginn.ca/lists/ho ... _sterh.php

That is a beautiful specimen SWMOgardens!!

I've never seen any pods set on Regal Splendor or Krossa Regal.
Just the scapes those tall tall scapes that become ugly brown sticks after blooming.

Interesting list, Don. I don't have many on the sterile list but I have quite a few on the list of those that set pods rarely.

I'd make more comments, but I guess that's a new topic. Better get back to Regal Splendor.
